Welcome to the Breakfast Show.......

Was at an EAA show in San Diego. Watched a Burt Rutan 'VeriEZ' taxi out. Two seater with only pilot on board. Turbocharged 6 cylinder Continental pusher with a variable prop instead of the usual normally aspirated 4 with a fixed prop. Nicely custom aircraft. Electric start as well. Beautiful home built.

He taxied out to the duty runway, got clearance, and apparently firewalled the throttle. The air show commentator on the PA was describing the aircraft, and about mid field, fell silent as the pilot got airborne, climbed to about 25 feet, then pulled straight up and climbed out super fast. The commentator forgot the mike was open, and said "Damn, he's climbing out like a homesick angel...." As the plane accelerated climbing straight up.

Sound was amazing, but the performance was like a scalded cat...never saw a small home built prop plane climb like that!

Welcome to the Breakfast Show.......

I swear the guy must have just run out of words. The airplane's performance was just amazing.

We also saw the Concorde take off and later land at the same show. He had to go around on final approach, and really poured the coal to it. More fantastic noise.

Airplanes....quick ones

I can understand fully why those pilots do those climbs....after all, I sold my Suzuki Hayabusa at age 66....

For the uninitiated, the Busa accelerated to 100 mph in a tick over five seconds, 150 mph in about 10...

I watched the Concorde do a touch and go at Oshkosh years ago. You're right about the noise--the earth shook.

Welcome to the Breakfast Show.......

Especially when he came over the fence trimmed to land and had to push it hard to go around because of some fool on the runway trying to get a picture. I suspect he got into afterburner to get it up and around...at least that would explain the noise...

Spectacular maneuver from my vantage point.

Darn you, Oil 'n water, now I'm going to have to do the OCD thing - count the Fan's rivets.

I like the circa 1933 Bessler steam-powered aeroplane.

So quiet -
you could hear the pilot swear.

I saw an SR-71 climb out one time. F-4s would lumber down the runway in full burner and finally lift off. One day I heard this unbelievable roar and looked towards the end- nothing there. When I turned back around the SR-71 caught my eye, high in the air over about the center of the runway at a really steep AOA. Unbelievable sight and sound, and me without a camera.
