Perhaps the Swedes and Norwegians should get together.....Yogi Yorgesson style.

"Da Sweeds and Norveegans
yeeze, the fighting and swearing,
Den somewun threw da pickled herring."

Yup. Neighbors that speak darn near the same language, but fight like siblings.

But oh, do we love our herring, and salmon, and cheese, and bread and butter...food is so important to us.

There are, in fact, two big jars of pickled herring tidbits in our fridge as we speak. That, plus good butter, hard boiled sliced eggs, and good rye bread is heaven around here.

MY parents LOVED a pickled herring salad. Pickled herring, sliced onions, sour cream, salt and pepper on lettuce. We (Missy and I) first tried it when it was an appetizer at the Fort Bragg Officer's Club in the 60's and every so often we just have to go buy a jar.

There is also a version in a white wine flavored sauce with slivers of onions. My fave is herring tidbits in assorted flavored sauces. It's pronounced gafelbeiter or something like that. Swedish/ Norwegian delicacy and very hard to find nowadays. It's not preserved, has to be refrigerated even though it's in small sealed cans.

My paternal grandmother traced her family back to Eric the Red, supposedly.

Why in the world would my grandmother store the pickled herring in Tupperware, then reuse the same bowls to store just about everything else. I could taste the herring on bread, lettuce, cold cuts....everything!

Eating at granny's house was a nightmare for any eight-year-old.

Still, she loved me.
And I loved her.

Speaking of Tupperware, this is an excellent documentary.

But, poor Brownie Wise.

Two of my best friends are ex-priests.

But today I met one who has not left the Church, and loves Saint of Me from The Bridges of Babylon tour.

Man, that is one kewl priest.

From Priests to Photographers - Talk About Heavenly Pursuits!

Really enjoyed interviewing one of the best aviation photographers in N. America for the flying rag.

Some of his work, from Paul Allen's Flying Heritage Collection......
