Washington DC Cmp Grnd ?

I love Cherry Hill as the premier camp ground for DC, however they are full up for the Aug 28th weekend. Has anyone got an alternative, where access to public transportation to and from DC is quick and easy. I'd settle for a back yard :-)

Try Prince William Forest Park Trailer Village. It is south of DC, near Quantico. There is a Metro stop at the next exit off I-95.

Check these campgrounds in Fairfax County. Don't know anything about Burke Lake, but I've stayed at Lake Fairfax in Reston. Power but no water or sewer. Come with full fresh water and empty holding tanks. Easy access and relatively convenient to downtown DC. If my memory serves me, it was around $28 a day, about half the cost of private campgrounds in the area.

You don't happen to be retired military or a federal employee do you?

We have also stayed at Lake Fairfax park and thought it was great.
They have a water park in the park area with a lazy river etc.

Dont forget Greenbelt Park (U.S. National Park Service) they are first come first serve with access to water and restroom. One of the best kept secrets inside the beltway.

This is the one weekend of the year (4th of July) they are usually full, most other times there are always sites available.

It's a short drive to the Greenbelt Metro station too.

Fort Meade built a new campground in 2002 that is really nice. It's a short drive from Ft. Meade to the Greenbelt metro station. MWR campgrounds are usually all very nice and you have access to them as a retiree. I always check to see where the nearest one is when I'm heading for a particular area. The Navy has some unbelievable ones that are usually right on the water.
Here's the information for Ft. Meade's:

They are open to anyone who can use MWR facilities. Active and retired military, DoD civilians, 100% disabled veterans, and in some cases, employees of other government agencies. Fort Meade, for example, has a large EPA office on post, so their campground is open to EPA employees as well as the military folks. I'm not sure what your status is, but you can call the numbers listed on the website I linked above and they can at least point you in the right direction if they don't know the answer to your question. The people in those offices are usually extremely friendly and will bend over backward to help you out.

Just called. The answer to vets using the facilities is no.
Must be retired or active duty or part of the government agencies on the list.
They did say that if a vet wanted to use one of the campgrounds who did not retire military, that person could be sponsored by a quailfied member.
I'm not quite sure how that would work though, I guess both would have to show up together at the campground?
Regardless, it's a nice benefit for those who qualify. Enjoy!

Well, I started calling some of the suggestions and the first one to get back to me was Ft Meade. I'm booked in from the 25th thru the 2nd. So it looks like me and the Mrs will be part of Glenn Beck's mob on the 28th. Any one else gonna' be there? Bluto, I'd be happy to sponsor you if'n you can work it out with the FtMeade campground folks.

Snedwid, glad my suggestion worked out for you. Hope you enjoy your trip. Wish I could be there in the mix with you, but unfortunately, I'll be stuck at work.
