Cool Washington DC

We are traveling to the Washington DC area in early June. We will be traveling on I-81 and would like to stay on the western side of DC. Hope to have a campground with a shuttle to DC. Any suggestions? Thank you for your time.

I know this may not actually answer your question, might be a place to start your research.

Google: washington dc campgrounds
It came up with a list of campgrounds and location maps.

We stay at Cherry Hill when visiting DC. The Gray Line tour buses come right to the park, so you never need to worry about parking downtown.

I have read that Little Bennett Regional Park is nice, but haven't stayed there yet. We did stay at Greenbelt Park and found it adequate for our needs. It's certainly close to DC and well isolated from the surrounding area (which I hear isn't that great).

Thank you

Thank you for your replies. I did the Google search, but not being familiar with DC it was a bit befuddling. I will start with these campgrounds. Again, thank you.

Look for Greenbelt National Park too. A national park with camping very close to downtown DC but in the woods. Local bus transportation also available close by.

We have stayed at cherry Hill in the past. Decent commercial park with bus service at the Park. We found, however, that the buses had to deal with the same traffic issues as cars. Getting to a metro station was still a 45 minute affair. We stayed a couple months ago at Pohick Bay regional park. Also a nice place. About a 15 minute drive to the nearest metro station and $5 parking, or something close to that . All day metro pass was around $15/person, I think. I'd do Pohick again before cherry hill. Might be personal preference but I like government parks typically more than commercial parks.

We stayed at Bull Run Regional Park last year. While there is no bus service, it is a very nice park. We would definitely stay there again. Good Luck and let us know where you decide to stay and how it works out!

Good to see that Greenbelt is getting some mention here. This is approx. 1,100 acres of woods about a mile to the closest metro station. It is walking distance from the 'D' loop.

Noticed in the fine print for Greenbelt that no hook-ups available and no generators are allowed. We have solar, but all sites are advertised as full shade. Anyone know of any sites that have direct sun for any part of the day? Thanks

I was there once. Pretty sure you might find a spot with some sun, but not full sun. Also pretty sure there were people running generators conservatively.

We just got back last Thursday from DC & we stayed at Cherryhill RV park in College Park, MD. The metro bus comes to the park & you can take that to the train into the city. We did this one day & going in is fine but you need to time your return or you may be waiting on the train & then the connecting bus. The a Gray line Tour buses also come to the park & we took that into DC. We liked that the best. Gray line has 2 options - one drives you on the same bus with timed stops. This allows you to see the memorials but doesn't allow time for the various Smithsonian museums. The 2nd tour is the Big Red Bus & it is a hop on / hop off option. It stops at both the memorials & museums every 20 minutes so you can take all the time you want. Both pick up at the park so it was great. The park has a restaurant with to go options so no cooking after a tour day which is nice. The staff knows all the train or tour bus info so you don't have to figure anything out. The park also has a dog walker. I usually stay in state or federal parks but CherryHill meet our needs for touring DC.

Thanks
Jane

Looking at the Website for Greenbelt National Park, it looks like they have a tick warning in affect. Is this typical for all campgrounds in the Washington, D.C. area, or is this only a problem in Greenbelt?

Also, are ticks less of a problem when cooler weather arrives?

That warning has been up for at least a year. When we went we weren't in the park long enough to know if it was a problem. Really just slept there. Didn't seem to be bothering anyone else from what I could tell.

Generators are allowed from 6am till 10 pm
Sites 138 - 144 or something like that get plenty of sun
There is one long site in B loop too that gets plenty of sun
Ticks are a problem - just use lots of repellant and check often

Thanks for all the replies about generator use. Hope to take my grandson to D.C. to see the monuments before he heads back to school.
