Enough of them.

And beside the fact that I'm willing to draw an inference from my somewhat broad experience, would you park overnight at ANY Wal Mart?

I wouldn't.

Shermy 1987,
I have pulled my AS many thousand miles and have NEVER jammed myself up so bad that it was midnight when I stopped. All it takes is trip planning which I was well versed in having driven transport over 3,000,000 safe miles! When I was still running long haul I noticed many large MH and campers driving in weather that was not safe to be out in because they "Had to" get to some destination that was still going to be there a few hours later!

Point being, not just Wal-Mart.

Regardless of the naysayers, we are Walmart fans. During our rather extensive Airstream travels over the past fourteen years, we have made Walmart our rest stops. There is always an easy place to park with the Airstream. We can get to stretch our legs, and pick up anything that we need. Some days on the road we may visit two or three different Walmarts. We have been in many hundreds of different Walmarts over the years. We have overnighted in Walmart parking lots a number of times over the years. We do this primarily when there is no viable alternative. We have never felt unsafe, and we have never had any security issues.

Life can be a 2 edged sword. Free market capitalism has provided a better standard of living for more people than any other economic system. Is it perfect? No, because people aren’t perfect.

Now that I’m on the watch list, let me say that I think most people do overnight stays at Walmart or other places as a convenience when on the road. Those getting out the grills and camping there are abusing a privilege that they will soon lose.

As for us, we prefer Cracker Barrel when going from point A to B. Show up in the early evening, have dinner, ask the manager for permission to overnight, then have a great breakfast in the AM before hitting the road again. They even have bus/rv parking.

Making generalizations about people who shop at WalMart is just plain ridiculous.

I've never seen a forum where so many people want to close so many threads.

What's up with all that?

And they do this because they have a right to do it. Because you do t like it is irrelevant.

Last week, after our Garmin directed us to two non-existent or closed rv parks in Sevierville, TN, we pulled into the Walmart. We asked an employee walking inside to work if overnight rv parking was allowed. He said it was an unspoken rule they allowed it, but we might get a knock at 6am to leave.

A few rv's were already on their lot when we arrived and 5-6 more arrived after us. No problem, and we appreciated that they were there since we were tired after a long day on the road.

In about 2-1/2 weeks of travel, we've used one Cracker Barrel and one Walmart. Prefer state and national parks and have generally not had a problem arriving without reservations. But we like the option that Walmart and few others allow.

Not zero, it just goes to show that RV'ing isn't without it's risk. There are bad people out there.....

Walmart Camping

I have made 3 cross country trips. 2 were for business with a tight schedule and 1 was for leisure. On the business trips I usually drove till I needed gas or got tired. Tried to use the truck stops but its either loud as heck or I got boxed in and unable to back up towing a Jeep.

Walmarts for the most part are wide open and useful for a few hours. Would never stay there more than 1 night and usually pulled in sometime after dark. As a courtesy, I always go into the store for something if its just an extra package of toilet paper. Try not to park near the semi's and instead near another RV either behind or in front vs side by side. Most of the Walmarts that do not allow RV overnight are either in a busy urban area or secluded like the one in Asheville, NC. That's also the only store that I know has called police to run RV's out....along with their camping stuff scattered around the RV, dogs running loose, kids biking around the parking lot, and trash piled up. Because I lived there and shopped that store often, it was a regular occurrence.

Airstream owners in the Wally Byam Caravan Club offer parking spaces as a courtesy to other members when possible. Same rules apply of not abusing a priviliage at Walmart as you would a strangers home. Its simple common sense.

[QUOTE=J.

I like Lowe's, Home Depot, and Tractor Supply parking lots. The stores close early, and there are no late night shoppers to have to worry about.[/QUOTE]

Never considered these places. There are certainly many of them around, especially Home Depot. Do you ask permission? Of course there is probably no one to ask. I know Cabelas would allow parking overnight. There was one in Alaska that even had a dump station, $5.

I think this thread could become more useful with creative ideas to park instead of rehashing Walmart. Could be a new thread is in order. .I once read a suggestion of using church parking lots. Though I would think a Saturday night would be a bad idea.
