Ok. So I'll give our only experience at Wallyworld. We were driving from Garryowen, MT to Coram (near Glacier NP). We had planned to stay at a BLM campground midway between the two but their was only one spot and we didn't fit. So we decided to try for a campground further up the road. In Helena, we saw the Walmart with a few RVs in the lot. We decided to join them instead of paying for a campground a mile up the road. We pulled in and parked under a light. After unhitching, unloading the dogs, getting the misc equipment out of the trailer (not joking), we headed inside to eat at subway.

After doing some shopping and walking the dogs, we settled in for the night. After becoming accustomed to the light and the customers coming and going we started to drift off... that was then the loud repetitive noise started. Some kids were out shooting guns somewhere near by.....next time we will take the campground a mile up the road.

There is absolutely no guarantee you will sleep better at a campground. I was once at a campground and carefully selected my site so as to be quiet. In the early morning the trucks came down the road engine breaking big time. Absolutely ruined my nights sleep. On another occaision, we chose a campground 10 miles off the freeway in hopes of a quiet night. WRONG. The campground was near a railroad track and another nights sleep ruined. One other event was a really nice wooded campground in northern Michigan where they partied 'til the wee hours. That would have been bad enough but at 6 am some jerk started up his diesel truck right next to me and it ran for 25 minutes before he left. At least at a truck stop or WalMart, you can usually predict what to expect, but unless you have been at a campground before, you just never know.

Why is it that so many campgrounds are near railroad tracks!!??

We have settled into more than one, only to hear the trains we cannot see.

The Hobos gotta have someplace to stay between train hops.

Simple answer--because land is cheaper there.

I've grown up in cities all my adult life. The first time I moved to a suburb, I couldn't sleep because it was too quiet. Creepy!

Mom complained she couldn't sleep-in because of the noisy morning birds.

Are there still "hobos" or are they itinerants, vagrants, homeless, etc. ?

I remember hobos, growing up in a town that had a railroad that came through it.

The local hospital where I worked as a teen, and which was right next to the church my family went to, gave them free meals at the back door of the kitchen. I think it was common for hospitals to do that back in the day.

Do I sound really, really old? I'm really, really not!

I think the difference is, most hobos back in the day, were respectable upstanding folk who were homeless or had a family somewhere and had to use the freight trains to find day work where they could during the depression.

I really wonder if some of the hobo camps of the depression might well be campgrounds now.....be an interesting bit of history.

Was that in Normal, IL? My Dad tells the same kind of stories, but he IS REALLY old. Just turned 92 last month. He was down in Shelby County and then at U of I by the end of the depression. There were TONS of Hobos in central Illinios.

Maggie, I associate hobos with the Great Depression. If you were a teen then, you must be in your 80's. I'm glad someone is older than me.

Summer before last we traveled around Lake Superior in Canada. We stayed at Neys Provincial Park almost the Northern point of the big lake. This place was very remote and completely beautiful. Even the gas stations were sometimes more than 50 miles apart. We settled in for the night in a campsite to die for. It seems that a few miles up the road is a paper mill and the trains would start up the steep grade right behind the park around 4:00 am chugging all the way. So much for remoteness.

Maggie:

They are no longer hobos. They are railroad friendly transports.

You guys are too funny!

I am not in my 90's, 80's or even 70's, but early 60's.

So, these were not depression-era hobos, but 50's and 60's hobos that I am remembering.

Not in Normal, either, where we have lived for 30+ years, but farther north.

I think hobos did "ride the rails" to find work, and then that just continued long after the depression ended.

Are we digressing just a bit from the original topic of this thread?

Oops.

Maggie

I think the Walmart thing has been beaten to death.

For more on hobos: Hobo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There was a hobo in the first season of Mad Men.
