Visiting Alaska? No hurry!

After seeing a couple campers around town with out of state plates, I thought I'd post this picture for those headed north. Don't hurry as we are having a very late spring. Normal snowpack at the airport on April 30 is one inch, yesterday it was 17 inches. Also last I heard the ice on the river at Nenana, for the Nenana Ice Classic was 50 inches so breakup is a long ways out yet.

This picture was in the drive this morning, snowing and 2 to 3 inches more expected.

Actually it gets quite hot in Alaska. We spent a Summer near Delta Junction in 05 and we saw temps in the 90's.

We only had 1/2" of snow this morning, but Denver got more. Yes, it can get hot in Alaska, especially in the interior. Also muggy.

So I should quit "complaining" about our late spring, and the 5 - 9 inches of snow we're supposed to get by Friday! Sounds like it could be worse.... You have my sympathy!

No doubt you're tired of winter by now also, we sure are and it is forecasting snow thru the weekend. With this much snowpac on the ground it will be weeks before things begin to open up. In the early '90's there was one year with only 100 days without snow on ground, I sure hope we aren't headed for another one of those.

I do wonder about travelers who show up here this time of year, one camper I saw had his canoe on the roof and was all set. For what I don't know, on a good year the ice doesn't go out of lakes around here until May 10 to 15 and it will be a lot later this year. Campgrounds won't be opened for some time yet.
