Virginia Highland Haven Airstream Park

We just spent 9 nights at Virginia Highland Haven, an Airstream-only park off the Blue Ridge Parkway near Copper Hill VA. It's fully owned and managed by other Airstream owners and they treat guests just like the owners. Great experience. For more details, see my relevant blog posting at Virginia Highland Haven Airstream Park - Part 1.

It was great meeting you when you were at Highland Haven. We have returned to HH for a few days and are enjoying the sunsets and cool mountain air.

Hope to see you at HH again during your journey.

Barefootdog,

We spent Memorial Day weekend at VA H H and really enjoyed the views and unique park.

Looked at your blog and you left from another favorite of ours, Stone Mountain SP NC. Puts you in a great spot for a base for day trips in addition to a nice park.

Gary

Near Virginia Highland Haven

We enjoyed Virginia Highland Haven the past few days. Last night we enjoyed dinner at the delightful Bent Mountain Bistro about 10 miles north of the park on US 221. The establishment specializes in farm to table food sourced locally. The menu varies from sandwiches and pizza to dinner entrees and wonderful desserts. Often area bands entertain. Last night we enjoyed pizza and live music. One of the many local attractions that make Virginia Highland Haven a multiple day experience.

I love everything this park seems to have to offer, but no fire ring at each site, so it's a no go for me. Please install fire rings and get me there!! MPJ

My wife & I stayed there for one week during early May on our way back to Maine for the summer. It's a beautiful, well-maintained park and the folks very friendly. We enjoyed the pot-lucks and local entertainment. Recommend it highly!

Ditto's

Good views, nice people, quiet, and owners ready in any way to give a person a hand or advice. One of the better ones... Hope to come again.

From 2 weeks ago...

No, not at every sight but this one is pretty hard to beat !! Plus a massive stack of ready to use wood that you can't see....Reconsider, you'll be glad you did.

Fire rings are a priority for me too but HH has a special setup. Sites are a little close so space limitations and a frequent strong breeze must be considered as just wanting to blow sparks into the nearby forest. When we visited HH has to call the fire dept (?) and ask permission. We did have a campfire one nite and it was darn good so enjoy but w/o individual fires.

Fire at Virginia Highland Haven

Gary is correct. The park host has to call for permission to burn due to breezy conditions on top of the hill where the campsites are located, often dry conditions during the summer, and the close proximity of the sites. Propane fire pits can be used on the patios. The community fires arranged by the host are great for meeting people and socializing.

Of course the "fire in the sky" at sunset is one of the main attractions at Highland Haven. It is visible from almost every site and you don't have to light it or call the fire department.

Can't wait to spend the night here this coming Monday. Myself, girlfriend, and her kids are spending the night here on our way up to Pennsylvania to visit family. Wish I had more than one night to spend there.

We just stayed here for the long 4th of July weekend. I think this will become a 4th of July tradition. Unlike other camps we were greeted by the host and invited to a BBQ. There were pot lucks, campfires, flag retirement ceremony, games, and fireworks. The boys were happy we had wifi. The only downside was AT&T does not have very good reception there but if you have Verizon you are good to go.

The pads may be a little close together but I did not feel like we were on top of each other. Probably because we were always out with everyone at all the events. Everyone was so friendly that it seemed like being around family so you did not mind being so close.

There was about 3-4 mi of hiking trails around the park not including the creek which we could not seem to keep the kids out of, and a small waterfall. The view was great and you could see clearly to the horizon from the park.

I was not too impressed by Flyod Country Store or the surrounding merchants but the El Charro had pretty good food. We also wanted to try the Piney Tavern and Restaurant and blue berry picking next time.

I am not sure if this July was an anomoly but it was actually cold up there this year. Which the wife liked. I never had to turn on my furnace or AC. Temps were 75/55 with a 7 mph breeze. Made it perfect for reading my book (through my eyelids).

The kids had a blast at the campfire. We all shared smores stuff and sparklers.

My surge protector/line conditioner did not detect any polarity or wiring issues.

Something else I liked about this camp was the secure feeling. At the other camps I have stayed at I was always conscious of anything not put away or locked up. Here I did not feel I had to worry about locking my door.

If you need groceries, there is a Food Lion with a pretty good selection in Flyod, about 25 min down the road.

I'm one of the stockholders here at Highland Haven, and I'm glad to hear so many of you have enjoyed your stays with us recently. We do our best to treat every guest as part of the family.

As far as security, I don't recall ever hearing about a problem here and most of the regulars do not lock their trailers. In fact, we encourage those with pets to not lock their trailers so we can make sure the pets are safe if something unfortunately happens while the owner is away from the park.

If you do visit, ask the host if Keith & Barbara are in the park - if we are please come by and introduce yourselves. I'm always eager to meet fellow forum members.
