Virginia Beach Campgrounds
I'd appreciate recommendations for campgrounds in Virginia Beach.

First Landing State Park
You should look into First Landing State Park on the northern edge of Virginia Beach. Peaceful but near the boardwalk. First Landing State Park

Thanks. The name must have changed because it looks like a campground I was familar with growing up in that same area.

If that one doesn't work out for you, I could recommend "Holiday Travel L Park", right off of General Booth Boulevard, in Virginia Beach. It's hugely popular with families and, provides many fun packed features for the family.
There is a KOA also on General Booth Blvd, which is close by (in the very same area)..
I have not ever had any wants nor desires to stay there.

I have stayed at the travl park, and am going back there in memorial day. It is clean, and as mentioneded very popular for all ages. They have super sites which are very nice but a little bit of a walk to the store, resturant if you are interested in those a lot and don't like walking but they have a few pools, putt putt, and other activities. The only thing we found was that don't pick a weekend when aircraft carriers are shuttling planes back and forth, at first its cool, but after about 300 f-18's going over at low altitude it becomes quite annoying. Also they have a trolley and parking lot near the beach which you can use, and is quite full of canadians as well. I guess if you like isolation this may not be the campground for you, I have heard as well the KOA has been run down and is not worth attempting.

Thanks, my schedule is very hectic and when I head out for some time on the Airstream, I like more natural and quiet surroundings. The Travel Park with the Putt Putt, pool etc does not interest me. We are looking to get away for a few days and had planned to go to James Island County Park in Charleston this past Wednesday. I cancelled because the East Coast is having rain all weekend. If the weather looks good for next weekend I thought we would head out then. James Island is booked for the rest of April. As is Edisto Beach Campground in S.C. Full of Canadians at the moment. We will probably go back to the Outer Banks which we like very much as it is not commercialized as much either.

Ditto, First Landing State Park. If you are coming up the weekend of April 2, we'll be there. Look us up. Jack Hornbeck, Norfolk, VA

First Landing used to be Seashore State Park several years ago. The name change caused a lot of confusion.

Dam Neck
If you're retired military, current DOD (civilian or military) then you can stay at Dam Neck (Sea Mist Campground). It's $20 per night with full hook-ups and a bath house with inside and outside showers for rinsing off sand. You have a private stretch of beach and swimming in designated areas with a lifeguard.

I live in Virginia Beach. I own a membership in Indian Cove campground where I stay most of the time. It's a bit basic, and is located on Sandbridge Road. If you come here a lot, the memberships are still pretty inexpensive (most are available because the original owners have aged out or died out, and time shares NEVER retain their value). It's quiet most of the time, lots of weekend event parties during the height of the season though. It also closes during January-February. A good bargain if you're looking for ownership.
There is another very small one also just off Sandbridge Road - Called North Shore Campground I believe - very small - only open April thru October - very quiet, very woodsy, very many skeeters. Reasonably priced though. I go there when I'm on my week "out" at Indian Cove and don't have travel plans.
Theres a very quiet one right on the NC/VA border called North Landing Beach 757-426-6241 or 888-283-2725 www.northllandingbeach.com Skeeters eat me alive there though (I'm extra sensitive to them and this one is right on the sound.) It's way way out there - and literally a few hundred feet from the NC border. The sights are big and fully wooded, and if you're into canoeing fishing, kayaking its a good place. Activities for the kids... not so much. If you want quick access to shopping and restaurants this isn't the one you want. Seashore/First Landing is... however Shore drive is getting noisier all the time. If you like wildlife it's right on the edge of a bird preserve - and you can take the Knotts Island Ferry (free) to NC and go on down to Kitty Hawk/Kill Devil Hills - and see the first flight museum. A good trip IMHO.
There is also another one just across the line in NC.... do I hear banjos? Do I remember "Deliverance"? Am I camping there? Would Larry the Cable Guy feel right at home there?!
Holiday Trav-L is very nice, the KOA is scummy. Both are under the NAS Oceana flight path, and when the pilots are doing carrier quals... OMG. Kids love watching the touch and goes though. I always take them right to the north end of the runways where it's even more impressive! I get thrilled watching their eyes get round. You feel that rumbling roar vibrating right through your bones. We locals say "That IS the sound of Freedom".
There is also one very small very upscale one at Sandbridge Beach - on the Inlet side. It's an ownership place, with very few vacant lots that can be rented from week to week. "Glamping" at it's best, but they are all back in sights. Literally built over the water. Drop a fishing rod from a deck.

Not in VA Beach exactly, but WDCU had a rally at the Newport News Park in 2007. The sites were pretty nice.

Holiday Travel Park is my vote for best VA Beach campground. I am going in just a couple of weeks and usually go twice a season.
I don't like the state park so much off season because there are no rangers around at night and I have run into big drinking crowds there at night.

Yeah, though not all of that is the RV part, of course.
The campsites are very spread out, and you almost can't see your neighbor through all the trees. They could double the number of sites (putting new ones between old ones) and they'd still have more space between the sites than just about any other campground I've visited.
