Vintage Units VS New Units

On several of the threads I have seen references to the "older" units weighing less than the new units. I have to assume from that statement that there is more than floorplan differences involved.

Can someone provide some detail?

The older units can be as much as 30% lighter than the newer ones.Mostly because not as many doodads and gilhickies on the old ones.My 1961 26' Overlander weighed only 3200 lbs when I brought it home.A new unit of same length weighs almost twice that.

The cabinetry was much lighter. My '65 Globetrotter overheads and closets are made with 1/4" veneered plywood that weighs very little. The galley cabinets are 1 X 2 hardwood covered in the the same thing.

New cabinets are more of a solid wood and are very heavy in comparison. Shower doors. microwaves, multiple speakers, desks, gray water tanks, bigger fresh water, 2 axles, rock guards, 2 TV's, VCR/DVD, Sat dishes, real mattresses, solid surface counters and more....it all adds up.

I can readily see the difference in weight based upon the types of materials used and the addition of all the extras. I am a woodworker and there are several decisions that have to be made in the design of a project to determine the weight, look and feel of the finished product.

Wouldn't it be intresting to construct an 'Airstream' using space age materials with strength, lightness and durability as the criteria. And we think the current models are expensive!

Older units are also smaller. Not as wide and not as high. Six inches wider and taller may not seem like much but when you multiple it by the length of the trailer it to adds up. Now with more weight one needs a heavier frame and some more pounds.
