Vintage trailers - no room at the inn?

Are there campgrounds that don't permit older trailers for any reason????

I've heard of them, never experienced it though. Most of the gate-shakers can't tell the difference between vintage or new.

Yes unfortunatly there are. There are some threads in here detailing that. Of those though many are not so picky if your a weekender or short stay. The better the polish the better luck. Good idea to call in advance. I usually find most lock the gates at the mere sight of my tow vehicle!

It seems from other posts/threads that if you tell them it's an Airstream when they ask the age they accept that as good enough. I would expect it's because it's very difficult to tell the age of a new one to an older one for most people.

Vintage Trailers and Campgrounds

I have encountered several campground/RV parks with rules regarding RV age. In fact, one of my usual stops when heading West is a park with such a rule. Initially, I wasn't aware of their rule as I just used one of my guides to find them when I was ready to get off of the road for the evening. The personnel at the registration desk didn't ask about the rig's age, but the park was arranged such that the rig was visible from the desk almost regardless of where you stopped prior to check-in. Later that evening, the owner's wife was walking about the park and stopped to visit and asked to look in my trailer (the '64 Overlander) -- this was just shortly after P & S Trailer Service had polished and Plasticoated the trailer and Fowler Interiors had refurbished the interior -- she remarked about the beauty of the wood an upholstery -- her next question was "What was the list price on your coach?" -- you should have seen her expression when I replied "around $6,000". --Then she asked about the year and couldn't believe that the coach was 36 years old (this was in 2000). I still stay at the park each time I pass through and have always received a warm welcome.

I suspect that these regulations/rules/policies are in place primarily to provide reasonable grounds to refuse sevice to truly objectionable/poorly maintained rigs. I have, however, encountered two parks whose regulations did not bend, and would ask to see the coach's registration as proof of age.

Rivet Vintage Rigs

We have our 59 Tradewind almost ready to roll. We just got it in Sep and are finally almost there. We haven't travelled with it as of yet, however we are aware that there is some parks out there that refuse entry to vintage rigs. We are planning an extensive trip for next year, probably about 5 months on the road touring the Southwest US. Very excited about the trip, and we would gladly appreciate any info on any parks that welcome vintage rigs. We love the airforums site and have found much useful information that helped us in re-doing our beauty.

It's hard to believe that some places would be that "snobby". I'll bet that they loosen up as less people are traveling because of fuel prices. The loss of revenue might make them become more realistic and friendly towards the traveling public.....just my opinion.

One might think so, but unfortunately the person at the desk who makes the decision may be a minimum-wage type who really doesn't care whether the campground makes money or not. (And may not have the authority to bend the rules a little.)

Like most, we have heard of such places but haven't actually encountered any. We recently stayed at an "RV resort" that "theoretically" only permitted units less than ten years old, but didn't bat an eyelash at our 1980 Caravelle. As long as it's in good shape most people can't tell how old an Airstream is.

See you down the road,
Nuvi

Yeah, one of our websites is for a park in Nevada that does not permit rigs over 10 years of age. I wonder what they'd do if we showed up at their door?

Oh well....I suppose there are those places. I wouldn't take any offense. There is always something else just around the bend

Fortunately, it sounds as if the list of parks that aren't welcoming is much shorter than those that do welcome us with open arms.

Yup, sure does sound like the welcome list is longer and that's always good news.

We've never had a problem in our '63 . If they are that uppity I wouldn't want to stay there any way. At most places, what's really amazing is how the people in the mega bucks class A's drop by for a tour and how complimentary they are of the Trotter.

I haven't found any of the RV parks in Oklahoma, that have restricted trailers because of age. I've only traveled in the 78 Argosy, and since it looks really good on the outside, it hasn't been a problem. Most people don't know what it is anyway.

I stayed in one with an age restriction that made a specific exception for Airstream. I called ahead to make sure there would be a spot when I got there and asked about coach age restriction to avoid disappointment. The Minuet is 31 years old after all. They asked what brand I was pulling and when I told them an Airstream they said Airstream of any age are always welcome.

I'm kind of a reverse snob (would that be a "bons")? I figure any CG that has such a rule isn't a place I'd want to visit anyway.

Gazillion dollar motorcondos -- yuck.

I sort of peeved one of them by calling the rig a "mobile home" and, because we were full, suggested that he go down to the mobile home park at the other end of town. It didn't win me any friends.

I just bet that didn't go down well at all.

BTW, how far are you from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. I need to get back and see it again. A lovely tribute to those that served.

I think it's about two miles up to the memorial. We can see it from our porch, and I pass by it when I go visit my parents, whose summer home (they're snowbirds) is in that little neighborhood above the memorial.
