Vicksburg, MS RV camping

Want to visit Vicksburg, go to the battlefield and would like to stay close. Any recommendations, also as always, great places to eat?
Thanks, were getting ready to pull out

None of the 4 Vicksburg campgrounds are 'scenic destinations' but we typically stay at the Ameristar RV park. Casino shuttle service, lots of security.

Lots of good southern cooking, Walnut Hills, Rusty's and 10 south rooftop all come to mind. If you want something that is completely weird, try the Tomatoe Place on hwy 61 south. Check out the old courthouse museum, its cheap and local.

I believe one of our forum members is a park ranger at the Battle Field Park.

It's not to far to Natchez when your visit to Vicksburg is done.

30 miles south of Vicksburg is the Grand Gulf Park in Port Gibson.
It is located right on the Mississippi River on the site of a major Civil War battle field. I have been there several times when visiting the area. Beautiful park with a museum and many civil war period buildings.

We stayed at the Ameristar RV park run by the casino a couple of years ago. Nothing to write home about but it was convenient - had a good tour of the battlefield (interesting to see the resurrected gunboat) and enjoyed downtown - there is a free history museum and retired govt ship you can visit on the banks of the river at the N end of town.

Also a good civil war museum in the courthouse building.

Check out Rusty's Riverfront Grill for fresh whole Mississippi farm raised catfish. They are located on the river downtown across the street the street from the museum. Delicious!

Camping

It is 62 miles away, but Natchez State Park is great.

When we visited Vicksburg we stayed at a B&B called "Anchuca" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anchuca
which is an antebellum home on the North end of town. We slept in the same bedroom and bed which Jefferson Davis's brother did Joseph Emory Davis https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Emory_Davis , and the bedroom balcony was where Jeff Davis gave his last public address to the gathered crowd.
The house is owned by two men from Atlanta who renovated it into the bed and breakfast...and I cannot say enough about the wonderful food served by the chef there breakfast/lunch/dinner... all exciting and delicious.
Make sure you also drive down to Natchez via the Natchez Trace.

We stayed here. It's 25 miles east of the battlefield. It's pleasant enough with great owners. It's actually a battlefield site of its own

Rivertown is not a scenic campground, but is very close to town, the staff is very friendly, and the crates are very reasonable.

Insight on MS state parks and recommendations along MS Blues Trail

Couldn't find this topic already discussed so hoping some of you fine people might shed some light on what to expect of the Mississippi State Park campgrounds or COE camping. Have you found them to be nice, scenic or otherwise?

Often thought about visiting historic sites along the Blues Trail in southern MS but not much info available in the way of recommendations for a safe, clean, pleasant base camp/overnight Airstream accommodations along the route.

If, like some other places, the MS state parks are suffering from ill-funding I'm open to recommendations & descriptions on private campgrounds too. Wouldn't want to leave the great state of MS unexplored only because of difficulty in finding good camping.

What part of Mississippi?
Most of the state parks are suffering from budget cuts and are falling into disrepair, specifically Hugh White and George Payne Cossar. J. P. Coleman and Buccaneer are still great parks.
Corps of engineers and forest service parks are excellent.
Many privately owned RV parks are excellent.
If I knew your destination (S) I could answer better/more specifically.

state parks

We stayed at Tishomingo and Natchez state parks at opposite ends of the Trace and opposite ends of the state. We did not see any signs of disrepair and Natchez, in particular, was well kept.

Vicksburg Campground

We have traveled the Natchez Trace several times and stop at Rocky Springs NPS campground for our visit to Vicksburg. Rocky Springs has no services so show up with full fresh water and empty gray/black tanks. There is a restroom there which is usually very clean. Great place to work on your boon docking skills and enjoy a beautiful campground. It is first come, first serve so plan to be there before 11am to get a site. Best of all it is FREE!!!

The MS state parks in the south of the state are all in good shape a well maintained. Paul B Johnson SP just south of Hattiesburg is a beautiful park with some new rest room/shower facilities. Large well stocked lake with record bass regularly caught. Buccanear SP in Bay/Waveland gets rebuilt and upgraded regularly due to storm damage. Additionally they have a newly rebuilt and designed state of the art water park for kids of all ages and a casino just down the beach road for adults to play. I do not gamble but do eat at their buffet, as a local I get monthly food comps and hate to pass up free food.

We head out to somewhere in Louisiana for a few days, think we'll hit the Natchez Trace and check out some of these sites.

We made it in to Buccaneer this afternoon. On the water but the casino traffic is a little annoying. Will visit Bay St Louis tomorrow
