We have stayed at Ameristar in Vicksburg, and agree wih above comments. Full hookups and easy in and out. Very convenient for an overnight. Two of our children live in the north Atlanta area so we frequently camp at Shady Grove Campground, a Forsyth County campground on Lake Lanier. Beautiful area and very popular. Water and electric, but no sewer at sites.

Mt Cheaha State park has water n electric hookups and its west of Atlanta but worth it. the upper campground is on top of the mountain but the lower one is at bottom. Not too far from I-20.

Stone Mountain State Park is beautiful (east side of Atlanta), and McKinney campground in Acworth was my favorite campground at Lake Allatoona.

There are so many campgrounds north of Atlanta.

Stone Mountain : We live in Atlanta (20+ years) and I've always avoided Stone Mountain because... Well, I can't explain it. But then last month we went as a quick trip. It was great. If you want peace and quiet, stay at the Family Campground, but demand the Peach section. The campsites are as nice and as calm and as pretty as anything in the North Georgia mountains. You can get to it easily by interstate or local roads.

If you want to consider something north of Atlanta, Black Rock Mountain up in Clayton - - 90 minutes North and East on I-85- - is a great state Park. The entrance is somewhat steep, but my old Tacoma pulled my 22 Sport up with nary a whine. I love it there. Great views. Nice hikes. Cooler than Atlanta.

If you're bound and determined to go west of Atlanta, route yourself to avoid the traffic jams on I75. They're easy to avoid : they're there 24 hours a day and they never move.
