Us 36 ?
I am going out west. Will be leaving Moundsville,WV taking I 70 west to Indianapolis, IN then thinking about US 36 to Denver,CO. Is this a good or bad idea? I am in no big hurry and would like to avoid the interstate roads. Thank you for your attention, Jim Lawther

You might find this site interesting. I can only tell you they have done alot of work on 36 in Missouri and it is a good road. I can't tell you what the road is like west of Missouri though.

Jim, If you are going to Colorado for fishing, I have some friends there who can provide some helpful info on where to go.

I often use US36 across Kansas to Colorado, because I too prefer to avoid the interstate. So yes, I think it's a great alternative.

US 36 through northern Kansas is a nice drive. Off the beaten path, these days. You'll enjoy it.

I agree - 36 through KS is a great road for a traveller. It is also the old Pony Express route and there are several historic sites you can visit.

Many small towns have places for overnight stays. City Parks, rodeo grounds, fair grounds etc.. We travelled Hwy 20 across Iowa and had no problem finding places. Also look for state parks. The 2 we stayed in, one in Iowa and 1 in Nebraska were simply beautiful. As I recall they were less than 20 bucks with electric. We were the only ones in the CG.

Are you really wanting to go to Denver or just go west? US 34 is an interesting highway but it goes through Loveland rather than Denver. US 6 does go through Denver and runs along the Platte and South Platte rivers. However I think in places it may be co-located with I-80. If I have a choice, I prefer the scenery traveling through Nebraska to that in Kansas.

US-6 crosses I-70 several places in the Denver foothills, and then eventually joins with I-70 and US-40 in the mountains west of Denver. I-80 runs parallel to I-70, but farther north; and it goes through Cheyenne and Salt Lake City, ending up in Sacramento.
As an aside, I-80 sometimes has high winds in Wyoming and Utah; and high profile vehicles and RVs are restricted from driving on this Interstate during these periods. See details on this link:

My remarks about US 6 and I-80 pertain to Nebraska and possibly Iowa. In eastern Colorado US-6 parallels I-76
I would not take US-6 west of Denver, because it goes up a winding narrow road in Clear Creek canyon with several fairly narrow tunnels.

In the NW corner of Kansas is Prairie Dog SP. We spent an overnight there and would have enjoyed more time there.

My vote would be for US 36 from Illinois to Colorado. US 36 is the superior route so far as I am concerned . . . four lane most of the distance with no grossly congested cities to navigate. Fuel is readily available along route and there are numerous interesting cafes as well. Pre-planning will help in securing the best camping accommodations as they can be somewhat sparse along certain sections of this route. This is the third season that I haven't been able to make my annual trip to Colorado, but US 36 has been the only route that I have considered for my Westbound trip. When I head back East, I typically head South and take US 160 through Colorado, Kansas and into Missouri where I continue on US 60. Both of these routings avoid Interstates and city congestion while being quite scenic and peaceful to travel.

Great choice. Just used it recently from Indianapolis to St. Joe, Missouri. I've used it across Kansas in the past but not this trip yet. It's a real nice road in Missouri. Still nice in Kansas but just not quite as nice as Mo. We're in Colorado at the moment and do plan to use it for some of our trip eastbound.
