Unavoidable Damage

Sometimes you must count your blessings. Driving from Nashville today to Fort Wayne, Indiana for Sweetwater Music's GearFest. Between Indianapolis and Fort Wayne (one of the worst maintained roads in America), a truck two ahead of me lost a steel turnbuckle handle (resembles a large tire iron). The 18 wheeler in front of me hit it and it cartwheeled down the road. I was boxed in and couldn't avoid it. Heard it hit, but I thought I just ran over it with my tire. Well, it didn't damage the truck but the airstream didn't fair so well. Clipped the bottom of the stone guard and buckled it, peeled the aluminum underbelly open right behind the stone guard, and then tumbled and punctured a large hole under the hot water heater compartment. I'm sick about it, but as a coworker and friend pointed out, at least it didn't come through the windshield and hit me. Turns out I am only an hour and a half from Jackson Center, so I'm calling tomorrow to see if I can come by with it on Monday as I doubt a repair center will be able to help this situation. Thoughts?

This is a 2015 Eddie Bauer Edition.

I am disappointed at how fragile the underskin is. I'm almost inclined to get diamond plate fabricated to skin this entire dark section underneath.

Dont be to hard on your Airstream, even if you had diamond plate on the bottom of your trailer already, it would have still incurred a like amount of damage..... Imho of course

You know there is a lot of doom and gloom on this site. You dodged a major bullet. They banned split rims years ago for similar unguided missiles coming thru windshields and killing people. You are so lucky to have only trailer damage and so close to JC.
What impresses me is your attitude about the whole incident. Many would rant with outrage but you have accepted as what it is. It could happen to anyone at anytime, but your attitude is be thankful that no one was hurt and it's just a trailer than can be fixed or replaced. Get it done and move on, no one is at fault.
Hope the rest of your travels go well, although you will probably have to wait for repairs. I'm an Oregon member. Come to one of our many rallys. I love to meet you and talk about your brush with death. I've had quite a few and expect more to come. Travel Well, Hal

So sorry that happened, you are right, could have been much worse. Glad you are close to JC. They will get you back quickly. I too travel all summer, working Irish Festivals. I love I hAve my little cottage on wheels to come home to everynight. Good luck with repairs.

Well, the good news is that it wasn't as bad as it looks. $2300 in damage. The bad news, I had to leave the girl with the Mothership for the week to be repaired. They were, however, very good to me and even are addressing some things that they pointed out need warranty attention.

So, I'm headed back to the Airstream Factory next weekend to do it all over again.

Met the nicest people staying at the campground there. All of them!

If the trucker was identified, that insurance should pay for your loss.

Flesh wound!

After 25,000+ miles of towing I pulled am amateur move last week and slowly backed into a small tree branch that pushed in the top quarter panel on my trailer at the marker light. Doh! Got the dent popped right out with a paintless dent repair approach. Back to new.... I'm sure you trailer will be put back to new as well ...

Any violent encounter that you can walk away from is a minor one, IMHO.
