Truck Trent

We just purchased one of these tents that go on the back of a truckbed, knowing that if we wait until we are done with our trailer we wont ever camp.

It looks like it would be a nice place for the kids to sleep if the trailer is full. There are even mattresses available that have cutouts for the wheel wells in the truck bed. We are going to use an extra futon mattress that we have for for it.

At the very least, trips to local beaches and a place for shivering kids to dry off and eat!

Hi, PinkFlamingos

I saw on the VTA thread that you'll be camping sans trailer at the event next month. I'm in the same boat- trailer isn't anywhere near ready, much to my disappointment!

I have been going back and forth about what to do... Get a hotel room? Rent a SOB (such as a pop up) and stay at the campsite? I seriously considered buying an SUV tent (like your new "Trent") and sleeping in my car. Is that what you'll be doing? Is the facility ok with that? And, more importantly, are showers available?? I can rough it but my husband not so much! I'm curious to know if the car camping thing could work for us!

So here goes: we are flying down and we reserved a site at the camp but have no car and haven't even figured out how we are sleeping. Bring a tent on the plane? We are totally unprepared. We will probably end up renting a hotel room and somehow getting back and for the rally. We would drive down but hubby would have to take a week off from work instead of one day. Ugh. Want trailer done. I wish I knew how to do everything myself. 😗

1972...100th anniversary of the NPS, we did a tour of as many of the National Parks as we could in 10 weeks. We managed 9 commemorative coins in the Vega/tent combo. Fun....wow!!

Sweet Streams...

Come to think of it, staying at RV park is a bad idea for us. I just got a hotel room (Days Inn Albuquerque West) and will solve transportation to and from hotel later. If you're thinking of staying at Enchanted Trails, I looked at the aerial view and I don't see much besides cement...it's an RV park, not campground. That sealed the deal for us! What would we do, bring mattresses and a tent on the plane?

Tell me what you decide to do, maybe we can help you out.

I got a low rate (but everything is cheaper than the Bay Area) so maybe we'll get a rental car. Maybe even split one with someone and zip each other back and forth in it.

That's a great story! I have a feeling it was a good investment.

Wait, a Vega? Wow!

The truck tent looks really cool, except that we do a fair bit of camping in bear country. A hard-sided camper can be a safety consideration. (Probably not so much needed in urban California!) We got a hard-sided canopy/cap for the back of our truck, and did sleep in it on one camping trip. Then we decided the Bambi was a lot more comfortable.

Yes, here in Crazyfornia, when I'm hiking, I'm afraid of not bears but people! And the occasional mountain lion, and accidentally coming across the wrong person's pot farm.

Ingrid, your concerns are probably more serious than ours, although come to think of it, we also have mountain lions and pot farms ("BC bud") out here. Also crazy people, but I think there are fewer of them out in the hinterland.

Yes our nutcases outnut and outnumber most other places. People watching is good cheap fun out here. Mostly.

Maybe that's why when we camp we eye the other people and are pretty clueless about being eaten!
