Trip to Northern Minnesota

Going up to Prior Lake, MN in July and looking for things to see and do up north, Duluth, International Falls and Thunder Bay. Any help would be appreciated.

You could spend the summer in the Arrowhead region of Minnesota if you like wilderness, lakes, cool weather, and the beauty of Lake Superior's shoreline. Duluth on the way is a wonderful inland port city. The state parks along the north shore drive are great visits and have camping (reserve early). Plan on frequent stops to picnic, hike, fish and enjoy the day.

A good destination is Grand Marais Visit Grand Marais, Minnesota - Grand Marais Area Tourism Association to set up camp for some time and explore from there. Enjoy the air conditioned effect of Lake Superior in summer (bring a warm jacket) and its gorgeous scenery. For memorable experience take a canoe into Boundary Waters Canoe for a few days, outfitters on Gun Flint Trail, Grand Marais or Ely can set you up.

We love the drive along the North Shore. Split Rock Lighthouse is one of our favorites.

The drive from Duluth north is beautiful.

Many nice state and local parks up thataway.

Grand Marais is a neat little town. Make a left just north of there and drive the Gunflint Trail to the end. Superior NF has campsites in that area, as well.

If you canoe or kayak, opportunities abound.

Nice campgrounds in Two Harbors & Grand Marais, both right on the water. Split rock Lighthouse is a must see. In Duluth, go to the old Fitgers brewery which now has a brew pub in it. Great beer and good food. Fitger's Brewhouse

Gooseberry Falls SP is an ABSOLUTE must. It'll be on your way if you go up to Grand Marais, and it's just a hop, skip and jump from Two Harbors and Split Rock. (Yes, I live in NC, but I am originally from Minnesota, and love the N. Shore).

When in the Thunder Bay area you will want to pick from:

Ouimet Canyon Provincial Park:
Welcome to Ouimet Canyon Provincial Park
  • This is a day-use park (no camping) but the canyon is an incredible view. The park is about an hours drive east of Thunder Bay.
Sleeping Giant Provincial Park:
Welcome to Sleeping Giant Provincial Park
  • about 45 minutes east of Thunder Bay - lots of scenic hiking and cycling. Reservations are a good idea.
Terry Fox Monument:
Terry Fox Memorial and Lookout - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  • a well done memorial of Terry Fox and his run - also an outstanding view of the Sleeping Giant. A spot you do not want to miss.
Old Fort William:
Fort William Historical Park - Home
  • Great historical park - also a must see if you spend time in Thunder Bay.
Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park:
Welcome to Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park
  • A nice park to use as a base for exploring the Thunder Bay area - the Falls are great to see presuming the water is high - if it isn't - well - the Kakabeka Trickle isn't quite as grand .....
Between International Falls and Thunder Bay (along Highway 11) is:

Quetico Provincial Park:
Welcome to Quetico Provincial Park
  • If canoeing is at all a passion in your life then you will already be aware that Quetico is one of the most outstanding canoeing areas on the globe - and you will already be planning a trip to spend time in it ..... but if you aren't into canoeing then the Dawson Trail car campground on French Lake is a great place to spend a quiet night or more. You won't need a reservation - but if you want a couple of the better sites then it is a good idea - I might suggest #8, 9, or 14. #14 does not have any hookups and you will need a 100 foot extension cord for #9.
  • I should also mention that if you are going to take this route make sure you are fully gassed up when you leave either Thunder Bay or International Falls. Along the way gas is available in Atikokan.
Think that is about it - have a great trip.
