Trip planning to Yellowknife and NWT

We plan on heading north out of Great Falls MT just before Memorial Day 2019,returning second week in September. Only fixed dates during that time are to be in Yellowknife from 8 July to 22 July. Hope to stay in NWT long enough to see the Aurora. Depending on road conditions we hope to take side trips to Fort Liard and Simpson. We hope to fly fish as much as possible and get some good hiking in, as well as see as many sites as possible. We typically do not make reservations and hope that will not be a mistake, as I’m just now researching where boondocking is permissible up there. Will certainly make reservation in Yellowknife as soon as that window opens.

If you have been up that way, your input is more that welcome. Thanks in advance.

Hi

Well if you are fishing for flies, that's the time to do it

You will run into a pretty substantial number of bugs in late spring. I'd suggest that if you don't already own a "bug suit" that it's worth looking into one. At the very least some sort of head cover would be a good idea. Another caution is that bear activity is becoming a bit more of an issue in parts of the NWT. Just how that apples to Yellowknife in the summer .... no idea.
