I stand corrected - looks like Quebec National (provincial) Parks, with some exceptions, do not allow pets:

Animaux domestiques - Sépaq

The webpage mapping the 3 Quebec National Parks that are on the Gaspe is found here:

http://www.sepaq.com/pq/

Hope this helps you out (it did me).

We stayed at Camping Tete D'Indien private campground two years ago. Its about 45 drive along the coast to the national park. Its a very nice but rustic park right on the water. Owners were great . Super views from the sites on the hill but they can be tight to get into.

sites sans view are no problem also water only sights in a grass field have a view of the water as well . You can launch your kayak from their beach.

Wonder why they call this place Indian Head

A stop along the way is Parc national de Miguasha if your interested in prehistoric fossils. No camping just the dig site and a very interesting museum.

Have a great trip !

We found another, site tht appears to be the official National Park website and it states that dogs are welcomed at Farillon, which is probably our most important stop on the Gaspe. Due to the other restrictions on dogs in the Quebec parks, we will likely shorten our trip through the Quebec portion of the Gaspe...too bad.
Will continue to do research, hopefully will not discover any issues for the other Atalantic provinces.

Still looking for suggestions on great campsites/places to stop.

We have just returned home to NC from a 2+ month trip to the south west...a great trip.
Finally received the Newfoundland Tour guide and maps....must say it's a big place!

We plan to cross the border at Van Buren Maine into NB-- St Leonard on June 1...any body crossed there?

Due to the dog situation and many unknowns on that subject we will only be travelling on Gaspe in Quebec for about 7 days. I have confirmed all the places we will camp are ok with our dog.

As for the rest of the trip we still plan on 2-3 weeks in NB, 5-6 weeks in NS, 6 weeks in NFL and about a week on PEI, followed by a 10 day or so drive back trough NB to Eastport ME and then ending in Arcadia.

We have most of our campgrounds mapped out and we are still researching all the places we want to visit and things to do...still looking for suggestions.

If any other travellers will be up that way, please let me know. Again, thanks for all the great info.

John

I have friends with a motor home (from NC) who have been there several times. I'm sure they would be happy to give you some info. If you email me I will give you their email.

St. Andrews is one of the jewels in Atlantic Canada. Sir William Cornelius Van Horne maintained an estate there following completion of the CPR to British Columbia. The estate is on a little island that you can drive to at low tide and is open to the public. The estate provides a fascinating experience. Kiwanis campground in St. Andrews is a great spot to stay. Cross at St Stephen, pick up some chocolates and then about an hour to St. Andrews. You can get back to your original route by taking 7 up to 2. Jim

A couple of suggested camping locations

- Hole in the wall campground in Grand Mannan
- Lily bay state park
- Coobscook bay state park

Sounds like a great trip.

We will be spending a good bit of time in and around Digby. On of the many things we want to do is go on a Fundy Bore Tide rafting tour on the Shubenacadie river. Has anyone done that? Can you recommend one of the tour guides or outfitters?

We are back home in NC after 2.5 absolutely great months in the SW and a great Alumalina rally at Lake Wateree SC. We finally received our NB tour guide. Two more local rallies and we depart sometime in May.

Based on all the great input we have received on this thread, we have most of our route planned and campgrounds picked. We like to go without reservations, worked great last summer on a four month trip to Alaska and our recent trip to AZ, CA, NV, UT and NM...hopefully our luck will hold out for this trip. Our 12 yo+ golden is still healthy and young at heart so he is going with us. Still working out the cell phone plan, we have AT&T, and we will likely go with Telus or the Bell co-op Canadian company. Also have to decide how much Canadian cash to take with us.

Still looking for suggestions, and thanks again to all who have sent suggestions.

John

We get Canadian cash when in Canada and at a bank. I think the exchange rate is a little better there, but I may be imaging it. Anyway, mostly you'll use a credit card and they will get a better exchange rate than you will, especially if you use one that doesn't add on a fee for being in Canada. This has been covered on several threads, maybe even this one. Capital One (Mastercard) has no extra 1% fee, but most cards do (and maybe all Visa cards).

The Canadian dollar has been roughly 75¢ US for several months, so you get a bonus when there. There are various websites (and Bloomberg TV if you can find it) that give the exchange rate and it is good to keep up on that. Banks will have their own rate which will be at your disadvantage and merchants who accept US money (and they all do) will not often know the current rate.

Watch out though....we got charged foreign transaction fees on all our VISA transactions. And, we had an extremely difficult time finding ATM machines that would accept our ATM or VISA cards.

Next time, we need to give this more thought and figure out the best way to deal with it. Pre-planning is not our forte!

Hi folks,
We too are in the midst of planning a trip to Newfoundland this summer. Does anyone know how easy it is to find campsites up there "as you go" as opposed to making reservations for every night ahead of time?

We thought we heard somewhere that in a pinch you can pull onto a side road to park over night. Is that true?

We've already got reservations for the day we arrive on NL, but after that we're hoping we can wing it. Do the campgrounds fill up in July and August? There don't seem to be that many in Gros Morne for example.

Thanks, Dave

I just today noticed that my Discover card does NOT charge international fees. Didn't know that and have a Cap. 1 Visa specifically for that purpose. There are options out there so do some exploring.

As of last summer, we had no trouble using our debit card to get cash in NB, QC and ON. We mostly used ScotiaBank.

Our Capital One card also does not charge foreign transaction fees.

Speaking of our trip last summer, we spent 9 weeks traveling through New Brunswick, Québec(including the Gaspé peninsula)and Ontario.
Campgrounds we liked include:
Kiwanis CG in St, Andrews, NB
Murray Beach Prov. Pk, NB
Kouchibouguac Nat'l Pk, NB
Sugarloaf Prov. Pk, Campellton, NB - they are next to a ski area and off-season you can use their lift for mountain biking…
Tête d'Indien CG - they closed early, but sent us up to Cap Rouge CG which is further off the road(therefore quieter) than Tête d'Indien. Both places rent kayaks and offer trips
Forillon Nat'l Pk, Gaspé
Le Bic Prov. Pk, QC
KOA-Québec for access to the old city - bike, bus, drive to ferry…

There was a ton of road construction, especially in QC, including Gaspé. With any luck most of it is completed in which case it will be smooth sailing now…although the awesomely steep grades remain.

Campgrounds in NL

We have been going to the west coast of NL every summer since 2000. "Gravel pit camping" is an option as is spending the night pulled off the road along the shore but you should also have no problems finding a campsite in a provincial park or Gros Morne NP.
