While on the ferry to NS, was told by some folks sitting with us that as soon as we get off the ferry, find a gas station. Story is a gas shortage in NS, does not affect diesel. I filled up once with diesel. Have seen at a few stations that they appear to be out of supreme. Have seen very busy stations but no 1978 gas lines. Was told by one of the attendants that it was a management problem and all should be back to normal by this weekend. note: this weekend is Labor Day.

We visited Louisbourg and are currently at Dunvegan, just north of Inverness. We start our tour of Cabot Trail tomorrow, heading to Baddeck and camping in Ingonish, then to South Harbour with a visit to Meat Cove, then Cheti. Still working on taking the Ferry to PEI...internet says you can't book a one way trip from Wood Island to PEI. Will call the ferry when we have cell coverage.
Looking for a place to camp on PEI....any and all suggestions welcomed...thanks in advance...

We have AT&T and bought their Canadien plan....do a search and see what works for you. My comment on cell service has nothing to do with our plan....just where the towers are...
Back to PEI...looking for campground suggestions 9 sep through 13 sep.

Looks like you had a great time in Newfoundland. When I was buying a sweater in St. John's in 2004, the saleswomen asked where we were from and I told her, "Colorado". She said "is that next to North Carolina?" So we live near each other.
I'm wondering if the cancellation of the Argentia ferry is common? And it looks like you took a ferry to Quebec. Was that the one at St. Barbe? How was it? I have thought of going to NF via N. Sydney and coming back via St. Barbe so we could return home through Quebec, Ontario and not sure what else. Then we would avoid the traffic from Maine to Illinois.

Try pinehillsrv@gmail.com. I stayed there a few weeks ago because it was handy to Charlottetown. Had a real nice dinner at Sims. Don't forget about " mile high butterscotch pie" in Cheticamp and if you get to Meat Cove, you join a rare breed of adventurer. But even if you don't, based on your Newfoundland adventure, you qualify. Good going. You have most likely seen more of Newfoundland than 99.9% of the locals. Jim

SE6 - they say you can spot the Newfoundlanders in heaven - they're the ones who want to go back home. Glad you enjoyed the 8-1/2 weeks. You have experienced more of the province than most who live here I suspect. Drop me a line if you find your way in these parts again. I'm sure Jake would get along fantastic with our lab Maggie.

Jim, thanks for the PEI tip, we'll try it. Most of the local folks here in Ingonish, say Meat Cove is fantastic, but leave the trailer, which is probably what we'll do...you agree?
Gene, we took the St Barbe ferry to Blanc Sablon QE, then drove into Labrador. Poorly paved road up to Red Bay, then gravel up to Goose Bay, Lab City and on to Quebec. We talked to quite a few folks who drove it...all agree it is an ok road except about 100 km near Goose Bay to Cartwright.

Doesn't count if you don't take the trailer! You will want to stay overnight. When we were there we encountered wild baying horses. The campground consists of a picnic table on the edge of a cliff. Jim

25' Safari with 2008 Jeep GC Diesel. I went around the Cabot Trail 3 times with that rig, counter clockwise. Bay St Lawrence is also worth a short visit unless you have had enough of beautiful, authentic fishing villages. Pretty hard to top Newfoundland. The road into Meat Cove is only frightening in the rain. Jim

National Parks in Cavendish are great. I just spent 8 days there. Beach is fabulous. There is also the Provincial Park just by Malpeque Bay. I prefer the full hook up at the National Park. This is my 4th time there in the last 5 years. Just not sure when they close. There is also a Good Sam park between Charlotte town and Cavendish, but it's more like an open field. Not great access to the beach either.
BTW. if you're going for lobster try the lobster supper in New Glasgow. Don't bother with most of the other shops.
Good luck.

Will check out the road to Meat Cove tomorrow.
Thanks Gator for the PEI info.
We currently are on the east side of the island....just left Broad Cove Campground.
The winds are gusting to around 80kph according to the campground guy at South Harbour.

Thanks for the info. I imagine you didn't take the trailer on that ferry. If my memory is correct it was pretty small ferry, but the wind was blowing so hard we hardly could get the SUV door open and they had to untie the door to the restaurant we went to so we could get in and it took two of us to keep that door from blowing across the province. Pretty hard to notice anything else. Years ago when I checked the road info on the highway to Goose Bay, the same 100 km was said to be pretty bad. How far into Labrador did you go?
When in Charlottetown, we went to see the legislative chambers. They were in session when we were there. It is the site of the meeting that created the Canadian confederation in the 19th Century. We took the ferry to PEI and the Confederation Bridge back (most expensive bridge ever for us)—no requirement for a round trip then on the ferry. While waiting for the ferry, a guy we were talking too told us about bad trips on the ferry in a storm where cars and trucks were being flung around and the ferry almost floundered. Very reassuring, but it was a calm, clear day.
You may the only person from your town that has been to both NF and PEI.
That photo of a NF house with the doors way off the ground was a very typical house. We saw many like that. All square or a bit rectangular. I understand they used to be painted bright colors, but white vinyl siding has become popular since it resists the weather much better.

Gene, yes we took the trailer to Labrador...we were that about four days. We dove just north of Mary's Harbouf, just to get a sense of the terrain. Going to Labrador was a terrific side trip.

Gene, my apologies. My wife pointed out many misspelled words in my last post to you. We were there about four days. We drove just north of Mary's Harbour.
Editors note: can't really blame this on autocorrect. So I'll blame Jameson's.

I didn't even notice the speeling. How much was that ferry round trip? Did you have to dry camp in Labrador or are there CG's?
Sorry about all the questions, but we are thinking about NF next year are trying to figure out costs, time, whether we really want to drive 3,500 miles to N. Sydney, etc. Your posts have been great in seeing that amazing province again and making me want to do it. We thought of storing the trailer in Maine and taking only the truck to NF, but we remembered restaurants in NF didn't have great food (Newfies must have iron stomachs and digestive systems).
Maybe I've said this before, but ending the NF portion of the trip by taking the NF ferry would mean coming back through Canada and avoiding all the traffic in the US from Maine to Ill. Presumably, it would save us a couple of hundred dollars on ferry costs too.
