Trip Planning Survey

Have you taken it to Alaska or the Northern Yukon. Other long out of the way places. I would be interested in what size AS you had and if you thought it too small or to big.
Saw a 25 foot Excella yesterday and it sure looked the right size for such a trip except not alot of storage space. Looking at a 29 foot Wednesday.

Hi,

Even though I don't own an Airstream (actually confess to an Avion) I did do the trip with a 27ft Wilderness tag along. Went from vancouver BC, to Dawson Creek and up the Alcan to Fairbanks and Anchorage. No problems except for not enough time for looking around and enjoying the local places.

If you go, a 29ft or a 25ft would be more than fine. Prepare your vehicles well and carry sufficient spares (I had no major events in the whole trip - except a lube oil and filter change!!!!!!!!).

Take your time and be prepared for anything and most of all, relax and enjoy the trip - that is what ot is all about, isn't it.

The previous owners of our Caravel took it to Alaska for a month at a time every summer for fishing. They finally upgraded to a vintage Safari so they'd have a little more room. They had all their stuff in the Caravel when we went to look at buying it, and it was packed, I'm sure they appreciate having the extra space in the Safari! They have a larger AS as well, but I think they preferred the smaller trailers for trips North, maybe because they also hauled a boat as well on top of the truck.

I'd think the smallest trailer that can do the job for you woul dbe the best travel companion for a trip through Alaska, for reasons of handling, weight savings, mechanical preservation and fuel economy of the tow vehicle.
My 1971 25ft. is light enough for this sort of thing, but has huge storage capacity. Plenty for 2 people for a month or so.
I would prefer a dual axle trailer over a single axle, less bounce, and added safety margin in case of a tire problem.
