Trip planning for Montana, North Dakota, and ...

Just arrived in Hyder Alaska and will head home to NC in a couple days. Last minute change in plans will take us to Glacier National Park for a few days east through MT, ND, MN, WI, MI with a long stop in Jackson Center for some TLC.

Have not done much planning for the return due to plans changing but will visit the airstream park in MN, spend some time on the north shore of Lake Superior in MN, head east through WI to Mackinaw and upper peninsula in MI and then south to Jackson Center.

After GNP we will head out generally staying on route 2 but based on input I hope to get will adjust.

Would appreciate any input for places/things to see and do. Also any great parks to camp.

Thanks, John

Come to ND!

There are lots of great places in ND to camp depending upon what you like. We just returned from Tettegouche in MN and had a good time there. Wonderful scenery and beautiful water along the coast. In ND you have many choices and each one has its own merits.

If you want something that is probably the most visited park in ND, go to Theodore Roosevelt NP in Medora. I personally love the Cross Ranch State Park for its remoteness and beautiful river views. Make sure to make reservations though as housing and camp sites can be hard to come by in this state.
By the way, ND is Legendary and welcome to all visitors.
Sandy

Hi John
Unless you're a real Custermaniac there isn't too much to see at Ft. Lincoln. There is a recreation of George and Libby's home, constructed from old original plans from the Dept of War. Everything else has pretty much gone back into the prairie. That said, I think it's pretty cool to see where young Autie began his last march from............

We are just back from Tettegouche. Lots of fun. Enjoy ND even if we just turned the temps down 40 degrees!

In June we stayed in St Ignace, Mi for two nights so that we could take the ferry to Mackinac Island and enjoy the noon buffet at "The Grand Hotel". It was a great experience reliving scenes from the movie " Somewhere in Time" with Christopher Reeve and Jane Semore, a movie filmed there in the late seventies. You don't need reservations for the noon buffet.

We stayed in RV parking at The Kewadin Casino, 3039 Mackinaw Trail. Tel 906 643-7071 $10/night for a hook up with water/elec. It's a nearly new facility with what I remember being a fairly reasonably priced restaurant/buffet, although the slots were very tight.

We stopped for three nights in Medora ND and visited Theodore Rossevelt NP. Rainy and cold so hiking was limited but we drove the park roads and the terrain is very interesting and wildlife viewing quite good.
We are now in Abarham Lincoln Stae Park. Although I am retired Army, I am not a Custermaniac and let's just say a very peaceful setting. We did enjoy the Mandan Indian Slant Village. We head to Fargo on Sunday with a must stop at the first Dairy Queen then on to Minnesota where we will stay at the Airstream park in Clear Lake for about a week. We have been on the road since June 12th and over 14,000 miles with another 3k plus to go.

Sandy, we are trying to stay at Tettegouche with Gooseberry as a back up. Pat, thanks for the tip on Mac City stay. We'll be there over my wife's birthday.

Thanks for the suggestions, and we still have lots of time and places to cover. We end up in Jackson Center the end of October for a tune up and then home to Terrell NC in early Nov.

Any other suggestions, please send them.

Thanks, John

Not sure why the DQ is a spot to stop but maybe there is something there I am missing. We were at the Airstream Park in early August and really liked it. All that free golf was a big hit with the guys. I liked how clean and neat it was plus they had a lot of nice AIRSTREAMS! Found one I wanted to buy but the owner was nowhere to be found.

Have fun on your trip and enjoy ND. Someone important said once that anyone can love the mountains but it takes a soul to love the prairie. I have to agree and luckily in ND, we removed all the mountains a couple of years ago.
Sandy
