Trip Advice on things to do I-10 to Tucson

We are leaving from Charlottesville, VA heading south to Florida and then west to AZ. We plan to stop in Asheville, NC; Destin Florida, New Orleans, Austin or San Antonio, TX, and Tucson we would love to hear from others who have stayed and done interesting things in one or more of these cities. Any recommendations of places to stay and things to do will be greatly appreciated. We enjoy history and sight seeing in general some of the most interesting things that we have experienced on the road are from AS'ers who suggest places to go and things to see.

Carlsbad Caverns in SE New Mexico is an amazing place. I think we stayed in a KOA in Van Horn (western) Texas off I-10, and took a local two lane road north (Texas 54) for a day trip. Highly recommended if you have time.

A small detour to Bisbee is well worthwhile as you approach Tucson. If you schedule permits, a night or two spent there would be well spent!

One of my most favourite spots to visit any time we are on our way to Tucson. You might be able to get a spot at the "Queen Mine RV park," then you will be walking distance to the town centre.

In Destin, you might try to get into Topsail Hill State Park - one of the nicest I have visited.

Ashevillle NC is a great spot for craft beer (But then, I'm am a home brewer and so a bit partial!) - and also there is the Biltmore Mansion to visit.

If in San Antonio, the River Walk is a must! I think I preferred San Antonio to Austin, but I guess it depends on your interests - The State Capital in Austin is impressive to see - patterned after - but of course bigger than, its counterpart in DC!

Brian.

Sometimes I forget that I'm a bit younger than the average Airstreamer. We prefer Austin for it's outdoor exercise opportunities, College Town atmosphere and music scene. If these aren't appealing, San Antonio might be the better spot.

Both have traffic issues, as does Houston.

BTW, consider 90 W versus 10 W. It's slower though towns, but just as fast in the open road. We love that route and take it west of San Antonio.

US 90 is also my preferred route from New Orleans to Lafayette. Better road, and as long as you time it to miss the school zones in Boutte, Luling, and Des Allemands, traffic is a lot easier on US 90 than on I-10 as well.

In the Tucson area, visit the Titan II Nuclear Missile Museum. Its just south of Tucson close to Green Valley. It used to be on SAC strategic alert until deactivated in the late-1980s. The tours are given by retired crew members of the Launch Control Center and view of the missile silo. I used to be a crew member in the 1980s in Arkansas...definitely a part of the Cold War history!

Remember the Alamo! And, of course the other Spanish era missions in San Antonio, if you like history. River walk has already been mentioned.

Go a little northwest of San Antonio or west of Austin and get a taste of the Texas Hill Country lakes--some great state park campgrounds. Inks Lake is one of my favorites.

If it's swimming weather when you get to far West Texas, stop at Balmorhea State Park, at Toyahvale, TX and try a giant, spring-fed swimming pool. Too cold to swim, go a little south to Ft. Davis, TX for an old cavalry fort and the McDonald Observatory star party.

Have a great trip!

A nice and interesting over night stop, if you enjoy caverns, is just West of Sonora, TX on IH10, Caverns of Sonora, and they have an RV park there also.

Hmm...
Along I-10 from Florida to Arizona
In Florida: Aviation museum and antique auto museum along I-10, great campgrounds-
In Alabama: battleship USS Alabama and submarine tour at Mobile Bay, nice campgrounds
In Mississippi: Biloxi light house and other attractions, nice campgrounds
In Louisiana: zoo and aquarium and World War II museum in New Orleans, nice campgrounds
In Texas: mission control in Houston, Six Flags, The Alamo, river walk, and Schlitterbahn in San Antonio, nice campgrounds
New Mexico: lots of desert and sand in that area, not much more
Arizona: nice campgrounds
Sounds like a fun trip. Enjoy it.

and if you can, spending a couple of days exploring the Arizona State Park at Kartchner Caverns in the eastern part of the state. One of the best preserved caverns in the area. Also nice hiking trails connected to the National and or state forest nearby. Tucson also has a great state park on the north end, and many more public lands all over the state.

That's at Avery Island, close to New Iberia, south of Lafayette, LA, and another good reason to take US 90 instead of I-10. While the factory tour is interesting (go on Monday through Thursday, because that's when they're actually bottling) the jungle gardens on Avery Island are also interesting.

If you are not in a big hurry I would agree with others and US-90 across Texas I find interesting. Stop at Langtry and see Judge Roy Beans place, Alpine, Marfa, Silver City, NM. If you like Orlando scene you will like San Antonio, we much prefer Austin for the music scene, great parks and vibe. Local motto is keep Austin Weird. If you like solitude Big Bend national park would be a good place to go. It has never had very many people there the times we have been. We love that whole desert area in Texas. If you don't want to stay in the park there is a rv park in Study Butte just right outside of the park.

Actually closer to Lafayette, in New Iberia. Lafayette is the center of Cajun culture, with really great food, if you like it spicy! Nice KOA on a lake in Lafayette.

Also, I second the recommendation about Catalina State Park and the Sonoran Desert Museum, both near Tucson.

I-10 Suggestions

These are not too far from I-10:

Florida - Topsail State Park
Mississippi - Vicksburg Battleground
Louisiana - Avery Island
Texas
* Brazos Bend State Park (near Sugar Land)
* San Antonio - Riverwalk
* Lost Maples State Park (great for fall colors)
* Enchanted Rock (near Fredricksburg)
* Nimitz Museum (Fredricksburg)

It's all good. Safe travels.
