Traveling to Santa Rosa Beach FL

Headed to Santa Rosa Beach FL.
When we go thru Tupelo Should we take Hwy 45 S to 82 E to Montgomery Al to Hwy 331 to the Beach ? OR go thru Birmingham to Georgiana to Hwy 55 to Hwy 331 to the beach. First route says its 1 hr closer.

Is the traffic not bad around Birmingham or is hwy 82 bad? We try to avoid bigger cities as we assume the traffic will be slow and congested...thanks for the insight!

Every time I've gone through Birmingham in the past 10 years, traffic has been bad. It's bound to be worse than usual on the Thanksgiving weekend.

Traffic is always a challenge when driving through both Montgomery and Birmingham on I-65. When we winter in the Destin/Miramar Beach area, we head south on I-65 and then jump off I-65 onto 31 at Hope Hull. 31 is called 97 and then 331 (or 9).... Nice easy drive with minimal traffic. By staying on 331, when you get down past Freeport Florida, you will cross the Choctawhatchee Bay on the new/remodeled bridge. There's no charge for crossing the bridge. If you go farther west on 293, you have a toll bridge or really long ride to the east to get south and then back west to Santa Rosa Beach. Enjoy the drive. For us, we would rather be on major secondary roads than on the Interstates. By the way, if you enjoy Asian food, we recommend Linn's Asian Cafe in Miramar. Best Egg Rolls ever!! It's directly across the street from the Silver Sands Premium Outlet mall.
