We liked Camp Hatteras alot. They have a great beach.

We used their water with a filter and never noticed a problem.

We lucked out apparently.

The immediate family will be much further south this year than we've traditionally been; down near Avon.

So I am trying Frisco Woods for the first time, this year.

I picked up one of their 30/50FH sites on their back landing spur for a Sa-Sa week in late June. Google Maps suggests it backs up into empty scrub on the next lot, so it should be quiet which would be nice.

... but contemplating ditching it in favor of the Cape Hattaras National Seashore boondocking sites -- but with a non-solar airstream, and with the inevitable requirement to pull out the water jugs, and black water "wheelbarrow tote," i'm not sure if that change would be worth it.

I've stayed at the Cape Hatteras NP campground but it's probably been 15 yrs and it probably hasn't changed. I don't believe you will have issue finding a spot. It is wide open / no trees. They had a huge shower in the middle where you just pull a cord and water just rains down on you. Great in hot weather / not so good when it's cold.

Since you're probably going to be visiting the National Park anyway, I'd consider stopping there for a couple days as it is a unique experience and area. 2 days shouldn't use up all your water / batteries and then you can travel on down south to Frisco.

Re: Frisco - I haven't stayed there but i'm sure its nice. I have stayed a few times at Hatteras Sands CG in Hatteras Village. It is open April - November. Its right there in the village so there will be shops and stores that Frisco doesn't offer. In addition, the ferry to Ocracoke is right there for you to take a trip over and visit that area in you TV. Also, the charter fishing boats come in every afternoon and its pretty neat to see all the fish caught that day.

Just a few options to consider. A lot more laid back than the northern part of the island you have previously visited. You should enjoy it.
