Traveling the Lincoln Highway US30

We are starting to plan our 2019 summer trip and thinking about traveling east only on highway 30.
We live in the Phoenix area so we would pick it up north of Salt Lake City. Any thoughts of what we need to stop and see along the road?

We done I-90, I-80, I-40 and all of what’s left of US 66.

Pick up a copy of this book. https://www.amazon.com/American-Road.../dp/B00H0UT5IG

It's the story of the first army convoy across country on the beginning of the Lincoln Highway. A great read before your trip.

The Lincoln Highway is on my bucket list as well. I hope to get this one checked off in the next couple of years.

I live along a chunk of that in Indiana, around Fort Wayne

Keep in mind parts of it have been rerouted, so there's "30" "old 30" "33" and "lincolnway" highways around here, which were all part of the original 30 but not called that anymore. Researching the exact route would be fun and you'll see lots of good scenery. I like the local chain-o-lakes indiana state park. Good hikes/walks/kayaking

We traveled on a lot of the marked historical route in Ohio and WVA this year. We even went out of our way to travel on some of the original brick section.
Went to the museum but it was closed for remodel.

http://www.lhhc.org/

I lived on or within a block of the Lincoln Hwy in Rawlins WY, Cheyenne WY, Fremont NE, and Denison IA. It's part of my life. All of those sections paralleled the UP Railroad.

Like Magnet18 said, you need to do some research to actually find the old route.

Hi

As you get to Chicago and head east, 30 becomes a fairly congested road over much of its length. That's not to say the trip is a bad idea. Simply allow more time for stoplights and city traffic. Also accept that some parts of it will be a bit tight when pulling a trailer.

Another key point, over some parts of the route, 30 and the old Lincoln Highway are not the same thing. Route 30 goes one way and the "correct" route continues on under a different highway number (like Route 1 ...). Spend some time digging into all this and understand the zigs and zags well ahead of time.

If you haven't already watched it, there is a Wyoming PBS hour long program on the Lincoln Highway. It's on YouTube so it's fairly easy to find. While it's somewhat specific to ... errr ... Wyoming ... it's still worth watching. There are *many* other videos on the topic.

Even more confusing, if you take a look at:

https://www.lincolnhighwayassoc.org/map/

There's more than one "official" route along with some other routes that (at least to me) don't make a lot of sense ....

We found the best ideas for planning a US 30 trip is to use https://www.lincolnhighwayassoc.org/map/, click on legend in upper right corner of map, and then click on points of interest, which puts an array of named points along the map route. Zoom in on the map after clicking hide in the far upper right corner. You will find some answers to your question. Hope this is helpful. Enjoy your adventure. Jim

At Fort Wayne Indiana there is Studebaker museum & has many famous cars and designs that were well ahead of big 3 & also was larger than big 3 until folded. In Auburn Indiana also Cord Duesenburg Museum w/huge display. At one time Indiana was #1 or #2 w/Ohio manf. auto states.

Lincoln highway

If you are interested, ft Wayne has one of the largest Lincoln museums around. Auburn just small ways north of Lincoln highway does have very nice Auburn Cord Dusenberg museum.
I believe the Studibaker museum mentioned earlier is in South Bend Indiana.
Safe travels

Route 30 thru Iowa

In Iowa, halfway between Denison and Carroll, drop south 12 miles to the little German town of Manning. Two great (undiscovered) small RV parks. $10/nite. Historical site with German Hausbarn, Country church, Farm stead, visitors center. No reservations required. Don't miss Deb's Cafe on brick-paved Main Street.

You will also go thru Ames and Iowa State University, with the prettiest campus in the Midwest.

definitely make the time to visit the Cord/Auburn museum, we traveled 30 across Indiana, Ohio, W Va, and into PA, but found the PA stretch to be great viewing but literally almost entirely towns and stoplights with way too much traffic. Visit Gettysburg, the battlefield is worth two days.
