Travel to Northwest in April

Will be heading out west in a couple of weeks. Our ultimate destination is Kenniwick WA, but we have a month to get there.

Original plans were to head to southern California and make our way up the coast through Oregon. But southern CA is not a must, and I've lately been thinking of taking a more direct route west.

Has anyone traveled this northern route through North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington in the April timeframe? I'm wondering if the weather would make it a risky route.

Any advice or recommendations are welcome!
