Travel Map Dilemma

For several years, our family has traveled around in our '72 Safari and marked each visited state on our US Map on the side of the trailer (thanks to Signsoflife.net). Now the dilemma...we recently upgraded to a '68 Overlander for more room which meant a new map. I planned to transfer all the states over, but the dear wife says no-way...this trailer hasn't been there!

Any strong opinions or advice on such a trivial subject?

It's obviously not a trivial subject or it wouldn't be a bone of contention between you and the missus.

My thoughts… Unless you want to revisit every state you've been to already, you might want to work harder to convince the wife that the map is for where you've been, not where your Airstream has been.

Besides, where has the '68 Overlander been before you bought it? Unless it came with its own map of all the places it has been already, tracking where it goes from now on is meaningless if the point is to track the travels of the trailer and not the travels of the owner.

Fill em all in then erase the ones you visit! Or, get two... Mark them ASI and ASII?

Our rule: The map is the history of where we have camped while married. It gets copied in its entirety to each trailer we buy, and then added to as we camp in new states.

Thanks to all for the advice...I think Minno has it right, but the ladies have a firm majority in our household so I believe we're starting over!

I'd been to several states and countries by car and plane before we got our Airstream. I would not count those states but any state I visited while in my RV, be it a current RV or retired RV, would be counted. I wouldn't start over in my opinion. This comes from someone who has never traveled out of our home state with their RV.... but one day!!

I'm with the wife.

Our Map is for states where the Interstate at least overnighted.

Might take a photo of it before you sell.....for memories and posterity.

My rule is you have to spend 3 nights there in your Airstream to count as a visit.

Some states are smaller than the counties here.

So, three nights in each of Texas 254 counties?

Or three minutes at a Rhode Island rest area. Are they even large enough to have one?

Where are Gene or Ag & Au when we need the wisdom of elders?

I do my best to avoid disagreements with my own spouse, let alone take part in one with another's spouse.

My own feeling is that I like to keep the shell of our trailer as close to original as practical. The other part of this puzzle is I like to share my experiences with friends, but not every Joe or Joanne driving down the highway.

We fill in our map if we have camped there. We started with a pop-up and are on our second Airstream. We counted Hawaii when we rented a Westphalia and camped in it for a week as we tootled around the Big Island.

We still lack two states: Connecticut and Rhode Island. When we get those, perhaps we'll start taking off states as we go, until we are naked again.

Or not. We generally do what pleases us.

What is your criteria for counting a state? Is it at least one overnight? Does it have to be in a campground or does a Walmart suffice?

Eyre', this is not a "trivial" subject. You are wise to consult the Forum on this important issue. One must explore the meaning behind the map issue.

Does the purchase of a new trailer erase the past? If so, are you still married? If you answer yes to 1, the answer to 2 may be no depending on what state you are in, but if the map is naked, you are in no state at all. You may have to consult a lawyer or a Jesuit.

The real question is not whether your wife (should you still be married depending on the answers to questions 1 and 2) should determine what states go on the map, but whether your wife is worth keeping? Is this the only problem with her, or is she anal retentive in a way that makes life crazy for you? Can you afford a lawyer (one that can show you how to hide money in foreign banks)? Is she open to compromise—two maps, one with the states already visited, and one naked?

You'll notice by now that consulting a lawyer is important to determining all answers to all things, metaphysical and otherwise.

[Transparency alert: We've been to 49 states together, with and without an RV, have no maps on the side of anything, and have other things to argue about. We consult a lawyer every day.]

Well, I suppose a lawyer would see it that way; us accountants have another hand available for being on.

I am fortunate that the 31-footer has so much storage space that Page has not yet been able to find where I keep our map "kit". Otherwise who knows where we would be.

Consensus in this matter should be as easy to find as it is in the WD Hitch forum.

Where on the map, does one place the stickers for the states of Bewilderment and Confusion? I have been in each many times and sometimes for quite a while.

You could compromise and each have your own map, then argue over whose is filling in faster Me, I just put a sticker from a place of interest we've been on my back window (see my avatar), although my wife says I have to leave some space to see out...
