My friend Dustin got his foot stung by a stingray at the beach. The local hospital washed out the wound bandaged it, and gave him the anti-venon.

Lucky for him, he had ten bucks cash to pay the total bill.

Hi from AZ. . . I love going to Mexico, always have. My 1st real trip there was bone fishing in the Yucatan in about '82. We've been many times & had no problems. Now that we live in AZ, I'm really looking forward to taking the AS.. . .We are cautious about where we go & what we do for sure, & I don't go places I don't 'feel' safe, but I felt less safe in 'Nawlins' for sure. Regards, Craig

My guess is that even if your buddy didn't have the ten bucks, he would have lived without treatment.

Well said. Yes, we are always taking chances but not all are equally likely to happen. The meteorite statement was just silly like talking about getting hit by lighting. The question for all of us is what is your level of risk? I still scoff at those who refuse to travel with their refrigerators running. This level of risk is miniscule compared to the risk from collision. Common sense and paranoia are two different things.

The advice some have given about being nice, taking precautions and going where "it is safe" provokes the question, how do you know where it is safe? When the state department puts out a warning about travel in Mexico I think most of us would take that as serious. Flying into Cancun is not quite the same as pulling your Airstream over the border and driving down there. After watching the news, reading the stories and reading the warnings from the state department, my risk assessment of pulling the trailer into Mexico is far to great for me to ever do this. As someone said earlier, if you are not comfortable doing this, don't do it. That is me. I wish all the rest of you the best of luck. There is a chance that everything will go smoothly for you.

Who will end up on the wrong side of a corrupt government? No one knows....

The state department assessment is not about the nation of Mexico, but rather of specific states, and calls out current concerns/issues with specific areas, cities, and sometimes call out specific sections of which cities. Read through the current assessment - straight forward enough to accurately plan a full trip but that advice.

I have a silly suggest. Instead of making snide mildly insulting remarks if you do not care to visit Mexico - don't go. It will have no effect on my decision to go down every chance I get. It is a beautiful country with great friendly people.

The people are not really the problem. The problem is the Mexican government......

Anybody travelling internationally should always have private health and emergency insurance. You would be responsible for your medical bills here in Canada as well, same as me in the US.

I do get a bit of a kick out of Americans criticizing the Mexican healthcare system, given that Mexico has universal healthcare for citizens, something the U.S. can't even dream of.

Americans are not willing to pay the outlandish income taxes that countries with so called universal healthcare have to pay or put up with long waits for basic visits or procedures. I have heard of few Americans going to Canada for health care but have heard that many Canadians come to the U.S. to see a doctor in a timely manner. I could be totally wrong in my assumptions. Feel free to correct me, it will not hurt my feelings.

Lol, Mexico does not have universal coverage.

I know folks in Mexico, the elderly do have the option to "buy in", but universal coverage.... No.

And,,, some Americans don't like the notion of the government running health care....

I don't know why though because the government does such a wonderful job of running everything.... Like the VA....
