Smile Transylvania, NC Campground Information

Hey,
We're headed for Transylvania County, North Carolina this summer to see the lovely waterfalls
(Can't find a dracula emoticon or I'd have put it there!)

Can anyone recommend a campground? There are five listed on the website above, all private. We're not going to the Smokies again this year so we're eager to try new places! We're thinking Brevard might be a good spot. Thanks for any activity/restaurant ideas or input!

I have been to Black Forest Campground which is near Brevard. Also, there is the Dupont State Forest area.

Ahh, yes! God's country. Susan and I love this area and visit there several times a year. There's much to do there and you fall in love with it. You've got to check out the movie theater, O.P. Taylors and the Music Festival. PM me with the dates you will be there and we'll see if we can get together.

We haven't camped any any of those on your list, but we do know a few things about a couple of them. First and foremost, make sure your camper will actually fit in the campground. This area tends to have "mom n' pop" campgrounds that are hilley with small sites.

Getting into and out of the area: Lots of mountain roads with twists and turns. Overlander63 (Terry) made a white knuckle trip down Hwy 64 last year. It was fun reading about it.

We have tent camped at Davidson River a couple of times. A great campground. Call ahead and check availabilty. The last time I checked, they only had 5 or 6 30 amp sites, if that's importent to you. I think AlanSD has taken the Airstream up there, you might send him a PM. RichardT lives in Bat Cave which is about a 30 minute drive to Brevard. I'll bet he can point you in the right direction.

Good luck, yer gonna luv it!

Jim

Ditto

I concur with Jim & Susan on Davidson River. The campground has always been great for Sally and I.

Hard to believe this is in the Appalachians, isn't it?

Those pics are from the Dupont forest. It's only about a one mile hike off the main road. This is the county road between Hendersonville and Hwy 276. Easy hike and there is even an access road for handicap access to this area. There are literally hundreds of waterfalls in the area. You won't be disappointed!

I wanted to add that you probably won't need the air conditioner in the Airstream if you settle on the Brevard area. Almost unbelievably, if you're under the tree cover, it's very pleasant there in the summer. Susan's folks have a home there "in the mountains" and they rarely run the A/C. It really is a great place and you will enjoy yourselves tremendously.
