Towing AS From Alamogordo NM to Cloudcroft NM

Trying to get away from the heat in June in southern New Mexico. Does anyone have any experience driving from Alamogordo NM to Cloudcroft NM - both up and back. Believe its a very steep grade. Also, any issues with an AS at 8,600ft.

It is very steep and winding. Should have no problem with AS at that elevation. Biggest challenge is to have enough TV power to pull the mountain.

I have done it both ways. Not really difficult. Use engine braking. I am towing w a half ton pickup no turbo and 27FB. Just take it easy.

Thanks for the feedback J2Becker and GoWhereTowed. That part of NM looks like a great area to explore.

Pretty Steep Drive!

The route from Alamogordo NM to Cloudcroft NM on US 54 to US 82. In 19 miles, your elevation in Alamogordo starts at 4,400 ft, and ends at 8,700 ft in Cloudcroft. Average grade 5%. That is pretty steep, especially for such a sustained distance. You will use a lot more fuel during that climb, and if you have any concerns on engine over heating, you may want to do the drive before the heat of the middle of the day.

On the other hand, it should be a beautiful part of the country. Enjoy the trip!
