Does anybody know anything about the Tom Tom RV model GPS? Anybody have one? Been using Tom Tom for a number of years and would like to keep the same operating system. But am getting tired of being routed through residential areas and over forest service roads or worse. So I am looking for a RV gps.

I don't but just retired from working at a company with 75 40' box trailers and tractors. I interacted with the drivers weekly and always asked about what GPS they use. MOST use the standard Gramin. Reason they give (gave) was that the "Truckers/RV" GPS systems will, to avoid what you are referring to, sometimes take them 100 + miles out of their way. So they simply follow the Garmin, if a turn does not look good they keep going and it re-routs. I have a system in our Ford truck, I think it's Magellan, but I also have a Garmin car GPS and a Droid tablet which gives us a complete moving overview of where we are going and what we are doing.

Good luck, been trying to find the perfect RV GPS for a long time.

I'm ready to trash my Garmin. It has led me up too many dead end streets.
I'm thinking about the Rand McNally GPS.

I bought a Sprinter based MH with the Tom-Tom built in. Hard to read the screen, so I built an iPad mini holder that sits on the dash and uses the Google maps app and I have instant access to Allstays camp/RV app.

I used Google Maps on my iPhone on my recent 3,000 mile trip through the Southwest and it appeared to work well. The price is right.

Possibly you could reset the paramenters to quickest route from shortest or most direct

I have found that sometimes it's best to 'just pass' an exit with the Garmin. I was taking a trip out west and it took me off the Interstate to 4-lane stop and go traffic about 20 miles from my destination. I later found out the Interstate paralleled this 4-lane. Since then, if I'm not sure, I just pass the turn. If there's another way, it reroutes. If not, it tells me to turn around. I think I've had to turn around maybe once in the last 2 years, so I agree, the truckers have figured it out.

I think that by switching from 'shortest' to 'best mileage' it will quit dropping me off the Interstate. I have yet to test this hypothesis.

Several years ago the San Diego UT did a story on how companies pay to have Garmin, Tom-Tom, etc. route traffic past a business. If you were in Durango and punched in my address, your GPS will take you 2 miles out of the way so that you pass by a ConocoPhillips station.

That explains why, when you are traveling on the Interstate, it routes you to an exit, goes around a few blocks, then puts you back on the Interstate at the same place. Microsoft Streets and Trips would do the same thing, it was the weirdest thing. Plan a trip that took you past a city and there wouldn't be any reason for you to get off / on again, yet there it was.
