Great travel log and pictures. You will enjoy the cooler temperatures in Fort Davis after the heat in El Paso. We were there at the end of May with temps in the low 60's at night and low 80's in the day time while it was already in the upper 90's in Austin.

Out in the West Texas town of El Paso....

We stayed two nights in El Paso. Monday was our full day here. We went to the El Paso Saddle Blanket shop, a 4-acre emporium with all kinds of southwestern, must have, blankets, pots, trinkets, etc. Then we drove up the Trans-Mountain Highway. A spectacular view.

Davis Mountains State Park

Today was a drive day to Davis Mountains. Down I-10 from El Paso about 3 hours, then we spent 1 hour going up and down a curving hilly road to the State Park. More rustic and isolated than some parks but still nice. We were told the closest Walmart was 1-1/2 hours away. We passed UT's McDonald Observatory on the way - makes a nice view up on the hill. The park is about 5200 ft elevation so the weather is a lot cooler than back home. One spectacular feature is the Indian Lodge at the park. The lodge was built by the CCC in 1937 and still exists today as a hotel and restaurant in the park. A very nice place to visit. We will be here for a couple of days to relax.

Davis Mountains - Fort Davis

Last night was a noisy storm over the Davis Mountains. Back home in Austin we have a severe draught, but plenty of rain here. I had to get up in the middle of the night and put my awning up, worried that something bad might happen.

We took a side trip today to Fort Davis, a late 1800's fort built to protect the San Antonio to El Paso road. We very much enjoyed this National Park site.

We just returned from 5 days in Santa Fe! Maybe we counted your rig as we kept count of our daily sightings. We stayed at Santa Fe Skies (Santa Fe Skies RV Park - Santa Fe, New Mexico) outside of town. We loved it there! Santa Fe is absolutely beautiful. We want to retire there someday. Did you visit the Jackalope store (www.jackalope.com)? Glad to read of your adventure.

That's ok, but don't cast eyes on the house we want to buy there for retirement! (Just kidding. We'll probably do Taos instead. Santa Fe is "big city" for us.)

Last Day

Today we spent our last day in the campground. Tomorrow we travel back home...a 6+ hour drive. We made our meal for the day in the crockpot using the green hatch chilis from New Mexico with some beef we bought in Fort Davis. We cooked it overnight inside the trailer, but I had to open the roof vents to keep fresh air circulating in and cooking smell out. Our experience in other campgrounds is that you can't leave food stuff outdoors cooking because the raccoons or, maybe even, bears will get at it. The meal turned out really well.

This afternoon we discovered the Skyline drive...a park road going up the mountain to a lookout point and cabin erected by the CCC in the 30's. We got a nice picture of the campground, but you can't see our trailer. We did such a good job of finding a shady camping spot that we couldn't see the silver shine through the trees. Indian Lodge is the white structure off in the distance.

It's like a trip down memory lane to see your pictures and read about your trip...we did almost the same trip in May/June except that we didn't go to Sante Fe...stayed at Davis Mts State Park, arriving there via 118 over the mountains from I-10...AND even went to the El Paso Saddle Blanket Company in El Paso. Some of your pictures look like those we took outselves... too funny. We look forward to doing th eothe part of your trip soon...Santa Fe and Palo Duro Canyon...youir trip notes will be a great help! Thanks for sharing it all with us...

Our neighboring airstreamers who had left for four days were also back, so I got a chance to take a picture.

Tomorrow we head back via I-25. then I-10. Probably camp around El Paso, then Davis Mountains before going home.
We love Santa Fe!
We'll be in Santa Fe for the Indian Market next month. We ll see if we can post some pictures too. For us it is also one of our first trips with the AS.

Great postings Tanker IP

Thanks for the great postings of your trip and adventures.
Santa Fe is a favorite of ours, ditto on the retirement of choice. Just need an S/F Airstream only community nearby!

Love the travelogue - thanks. As to cooking outdoors, we've never had any critters bother us or our food while we're cooking. However, we are fastidious about cleaning up.

Very nice!! You should consider adding some of the campgrounds you visited to the "Reviews" section up above (if they aren't there already) Makes for a great place when others are contemplating a trip and need some suggestions on where to stay. We added a couple from some of our trips and have looked at others suggested there. Also good when you can't remember what post had what campground a couple of years ago We have been to NM several times and would love to have new places to explore.

By the way, we love Austin also!! (several family members there)
