Tips for traveling with 1 yr old: total rookies

Dear all,

Hope that this post finds everyone well. So, the post subject pretty much captures it. We're brand new to the AS world, going on a 6 day trip with a rented 23' and taking our 1 year old kiddo along for the adventure.

Any thoughts, opinions, or suggestions?

Thanks!
Andrew & Lindsay

I always found kids were very portable! Good safety seat, get out and move often with the little ones (as well as yourself) and have fun!

Carry plenty of diapers and other kid care products needed. Favorite toys and blanket so kiddo feels at home.
Our youngest went on a major camping trip at the age of 8 months. Tent camped out of a Volvo station wagon with his two brothers. San Diego to Canadian border in two weeks.
Nothing quite like warming a bottle on a Coleman camp stove in driving rain at 0400 in the redwoods....was a great adventure that convinced DW and I to build our van conversion.
15 years later, I found a stashed can of expired formula and a sealed bag of diapers in the spare tire well of the Volvo from that adventure.
Great memories, and I’m convinced that’s why all the boys loved camping and became Eagle Scouts when they grew up. Memories are still fresh. Still have the camp stove...[emoji3]

As already mentioned, kids are portable. You won’t need anything special for your trip that you won’t normally take for a day trip, just more of everything. Keep cell phones charged and do NOT rely solely on navigation system to get you were you want to go. Common sense and an old fashioned map are always a good thing to keep with you. Make sure you have contact information for the rental company close and verify that number works 24/7. Emergencies rarely happen 9-5 m-f. Obviously your one-year-old will not remember this trip but you will. Have fun, take lots of photos.

I would purchase some bottled water in order to make the baby formula, if not breastfeeding and still bottle feeding, as I wouldn't rely on the sanitary level of the holding tank water, or the city water provided by campgrounds.

Cheers

If you have a schedule (feeding, nap time, changing diapers, sleep time) stick to it if you can. Keep a positive attitude, make everything fun and an adventure. Bring things that are familiar. Don't take risks as if you were childless (ie hiking the unknown). And most importantly "a little dirt never hurt".

Take as many photos and video as possible. One of my many life's regrets was the RV rental camping trip where my daughter learned to walk, and I did not capture the moment.

Our kids really liked the peapod tent and it keeps them out of trouble when your setting up.

Bring balls to play with but be careful they don’t roll on to poison ivy.

Stick to the kids regular schedule as much as possible.

Dittos to what dnas said.

Our daughter has been AS camping since 6 months of age and she is currently 9 years old - it's been a blast!

Many years ago we camped with my son about the time we were potty training. One night I took hi to the outhouse, hiked him up a bit and shined a flash light on the hole in the seat. I said hit the light. He did in my hand.

Be prepared as your grows up.

Here's a tip for the departure and return, particularly for the driver. Take a beer or two out of your supply for the trip, and leave them at home in the fridge. That way, when you have that stressful, sad drive home you have something to look forward to!
