Finally!

I get my van back in a couple of hours.......

The little beasty now sorts a totally new bottom end: crank, main bearings, seals, gaskets, harmonic balancer and keyway, and what ever little bits and pieces are required to button it all up. The dealer said that they have been running it for a couple of hours and it looks fine. One more test run and it's all MINE!!!!

Seems that the replacement harmonic balancer that I had installed in Dec, '07 at 95K miles was the culprit, and Mopar covered that part, along with all of the colateral damage that it did under their 12/12K new parts warranty. HOW NICE !!!!!!!!!!!!

Now on to the serious stuff....like completing the install of my AM Solar charging system, the 2000 watt Magnum sine wave inverter, all of the controls, wiring and the like. Then add a couple of OEM wide towing mirrors that they use on the class C motor homes that base on the Sprinter for better rear visibility with the trailer attached.

Then.......sort/pack, sort/pack and sort/pack some more to get ready for the 5 month journey.

I can't take everything with me , but I am managing most of my tools, motorcycle, my 2 bikes (road and mountain) and whatever I can fill the little nooks and crannies with.

Hoping to hit the highway on Thurs. but definitely by Friday!

As always, I'll try to post photos and a narrative of the trip................so stay tuned!

Hi Lew,

Since you have both road and mountain bikes, consider visiting Little Rock. Lots of good riding for either. The trails include two bike/pedestrian bridges at each end of a 15 mile or so loop on both sides of the Arkansas River. At the west end is the Big Dam Bridge - Pulaski County Arkansas, and at the east end is a converted rail bridge near the Clinton Presidential Library. I haven’t been across it yet. Photos at New Pedestrian Bridge in Little Rock on Flickr - Photo Sharing!.

Also, it’s only 50 miles from Searcy to Little Rock.

Have a safe journey. If you want some truly spectacular mountain biking, you should come up to my neck of the woods!

For sure!

I hope to get to Whistler before I'm 60!

That doesn't leave me a lot of time, though!!!

Hey Lew...

I too have a sprinter, not for towing but for my work vehicle. I have now about 108K with no problems, but for the last 4k miles I have had a wierd knocking/rattling only at idle. If you apply a little throttle it goes away.

I cannot find anything loose, alternator bearings good, p/s bearings good. Did yours make any sounds or give you any notice before coming apart??

SS,

Your harmonic balancer is about to be toast! Mine did exactly the same thing the first time!!!! I think it's connected to the crank pulley at the bottom of the serpentine belt.

Better get it to your dealer and have their BEST tech go over the balancer ASAP! It's WAY cheaper to replace the balancer than the entire bottom end!

The part was close to $300 and 4 hours to install......depending on your local dealer's labor rate.

Made It!!!

I'M FINALLY ON THE ROAD

After more packing on Sat AM (Friday PM got rained out!) I hit the road with my fully loaded van and Airstream at about 1100. Just to prove the point that I can't pack lite? I have enclosed a few photos of the interior of the van. The s bikes are riding snugly in the trailer on their special rack.

After the splendid cuisine and parking lot accomodations of the Cracker Barrel in Pensacola, FL last night, I found myself in an Airstream-only park in East Texas known as Texas Airstream Harbor. It's in a lovely setting adjacent to a National Forest and shares some of the shore line of the BIG lake in the NF. GREAT SETTING! It's mostly empty as many of the residents are Snowbirds, but there is a great sense of community even with the few that remain. WBCCI membership is required.

I start installing an AM Solar charging system, 4 Lifeline GPL-4CT batteries, and a Magnum 2000 watt sine wave inverter charger at 0800 tomorrow. I'll document the install and do a thread about it when the job is complete.
