Yes it must be nice to be able to commute to Yosemite, Hetch Hetchy, Sequoia and Kings Canyon.

Yosemite is pretty safe, barring rock falls from the sheer granite walls. Most Yosemite Valley campsites are far enough into the middle to be safe. Yellowstone is the "super volcano."

I think you're confusing Yosemite with Yellowstone.

The valley is a zoo in July. I know, I was there July, 2009.
Stay elsewhere and commute in a day. We were in the park five days and our one day in the valley was not the high-point.

Besides, if Yellowstone goes, you might as well have front row seats

I was talking to a ranger at Yellowstone who said the risk of a catastrophic eruption is all hype. Said the geology is all wrong. Said an eruption is possible but would be a lava flow of thick sticky lava like Hawaii. Famous last words?

We were at Yosemite on the 1st week of June. The valley at that time was so packed with people, cars, dogs and buses we got out after a couple of hours. After that experience we would not want to stay in the valley. It even smelled bad in places from the exhaust.
We had a site at Groveland. If you stay there ask for a place at the top backed into the trees.
The little hotel in Groveland has a great resturant and, if its warm, you can eat on the terrace. The only drawback is getting up and then down Priest's Grade. Just go slow.

Here is the email answer I got from NPS Yosemite about first come first served campsites.
You do have a reasonable chance of finding a first-come, first-served
campsite in mid-July if you can get to one of those campgrounds by
mid-morning. Visit Yosemite National Park - Camping Without a Reservation (U.S. National Park Service) for
more information.

I found out the hard way that many of the 'good' sites in popular parks are reserved a month ahead of the time they are actually 'available' for reservations...
The clever ones had called the month before (being available) and reserved their site during the last couple of days of the 'future' month and then extended into the following month (not yet reservable) for the additional days they wanted...these guys always get the best sites!
I guess if you're flexible about dates, there's a way to 'work' the system...
