and then

we pulled out of quarry lake and headed for the san juan ferry….

we were set to sail at 10:35…got in line paid $202.00 for a round trip ticket…and got ready to board.

the trip was the route that leaves anacordes and then sails to lopez and then shaw islands and then orcas taking about one and one half hours….

the day was fair after nightly rains at deception pass and as we drove off the ferry at orcas village it had rained during the night but was a beautiful day on the island, we proceeded to west beach resort checked in and got set up.

water/electric no sewer at all..beautiful setting $30.00 plus 7 bucks each for the dogs…. oh well…dogs get charged for here…we have a pet deposit in the house we are going to rent..

WE DROVE TO OLGA THE FIRST DAY1111

looking at houses in rosario and deer harbor…..

rains here each day….

but it is beautiful

the adventure begins…in earnest

as if they weren't already….as we just on a whim came to Orcas in july to scope it out….went home put the house up for sale…packed or sold all our stuff…she kept plenty…a pod full.

sold it in five days…loaded up OCT 1st and headed to the PNW…took a leisurely trip and hit the island 7 days ago. we just closed/signed the papers this past friday at a title company on the island …it funds oct 29

we had been in contact with a leasing agent on the island for a month before we began this journey…feeling confident that we would have several properties available…as this agent reassured us that there was no need nor did they pre lease..just show up and …we could not get pre approved before hand…but don't worry there will be several for you to choose from….

well as we were traveling here she thew us under the bus and ran over us twice or more

so we got here …naked as a jaybird….but luckily…as this entire endeavor has been…LUCKY…

we have now secured a cozy seaside cottage in Rosario……not what we had been looking at …but delightful nonetheless.

close to moran state park and the cascade bay is in view of the cottage and a mere leisurely walk away is the mansion at Rosario and minutes from eastbound wa 98245…...

so ……..tomorrow is the first day of island life in a seaside cottage by the bay….ain't life grand

The Orcas Island Adventure

For courtesy parking permission you'll have to ask Wilson.

moved into the cottage today…took about four trips…moving stuff out of the stream…..about a 11 mile round trip from west beach to rosario…..

this island really feels like home….

got a post office box in washington…got a physical address…got water service…got electric service…..

we are going to make a trip to the mainland this thursday…day trip…just to shop off the island and see how the commute works for ISLANDERS

If you take Wilson with you on the raft, don't let him fall overboard.

Yeah, it's a weak Castaway joke.

ain't it funny

how time slips away…thanks willie!

time….. we have lived and worked in the central time zone all our years…

when traveling…we have remained on central time…our Television originates in this zone and really controls one perception of time… and in the summer when in the pacific time zone…we are early risers and if up at 6am central time…is 4am pacific…and in the summer difference in time as viewed by the rising of the sun…the perception is blurred….

but now….trying to live here…officially we are on central time…and it is quite a hoot to be able to extend one's day by switching …mentally back and forth between zones….

the only rub comes late at night and early in the morning…..if it is 10pm texas time and i want to extend the day …i switch to pacific time and gain two hours….

but in the mornings…it is taking a measure to adapt…so sitting here now it is about 9am central…but pitch dark outside…at 10 am central time…it will just begin to get light outside…..

as the winter season approaches and at december 21…i won't see the sun until noon texas time…due to the latitude of 48. something….and the mountains on the island…….

so i am a time traveler…..

Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun,
and I say, It's all right

Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun
It's all right
It's all right

I'm sure the draw to adjust, rather than bail and return to Texas, will prevail.

Shifting time zones is always something of a trial. We used to verbally be thankful every time we returned to the Central time zone, when national news was on when it was "supposed" to be on.

The longer darkness would be difficult for me.

Enjoy.

the bridge has burned to the ground…….

no turning back…i am an islander

tryin to figure out our first ferry trip…one where we leave here..dogs and all, as usual…we are never without them

do our shopping….. and SUCCESSFULLY make the ferry for the return back home…..or ….. gonna try it on sunday,….go to fred meyer and shop….and just make a trip to the mainland for shopping..or recreation…or whatever…

just what islanders do….

been in our cottage just a few days…landlord is bringing a washer and dryer for us…neat…

the area we are in…Rosario…is a "resort community" Anchored by "the mansion at rosario"….open all year with a master chef…

serving local delicacies such as "poached Buck Bay duck eggs, or black dragon organic farm mixed green salad…or clams fresh from cascade bay and local halibut from eastbound…served as fish and chips….yum, yum

took another step today…opened a bank account…the local Islanders Bank….

rained most of the day….liquid sunshine…

me and the two pups

are having a ball exploring the grounds of the rosario resort…it sits right on a point on cascade bay which is in the eastbound…a fiord…they call it…a long narrow inlet of the sea bounded by high mountains….

rosario is at the base of Buck Mountain…
home to many homes with multi-million dollar views…but one needs an army tank to navigate the roads…which are private or hoa maintained…yea right...

our little cottage is at the near base of the hill... on a cliff... a short walk from the resort grounds and it has many walking trails along the windy bluff…and down by the marina…

milton had his paradise lost…

Kingfisher24 welcome to the San Juans! My husband and I honeymooned at Rosario (many moons ago) and fell in love with the islands, too. After cruising the island waters for 7 summers in our sailboat, we ended up with a home on Blakely Island. If you look south down East Sound from Rosario you see the "little Island" with the beautiful green meadow - that's us. We divide our time between Portland OR, Blakely, and since this past July, land-cruising in our AS. Since Blakely isn't ferry serviced we travel by car to Anacortes then take the boat we keep in Anacortes over to the island. We love the Islands whether it be sunny, raining, snowing or blowing a gale - they are magic! We know you'll not regret your Orcas Island Adventure - our adventure with the Islands is rolling into year 25. Good on you! Glad to have you as a neighbor. The Bonicas.

that sounds neat Land Sailor

i have these thoughts about a boat:

but they say the happier days of a boat owners life is the day you buy the boat……
but the happiest is the day you sell it

never had a boat…but think i would like to learn how to sail…or something….
especially living on an island….water everywhere…. a sailboat…...

it is exciting , thinking and planning about buying a house here or building one….

so we are looking on line at many properties…pictures make them all surreally beautiful….and the most common drawback is they are all most inaccessible because of the less than adequate roads to climb these mountain vistas….

looking for flat land on orcas is like finding pearls in the gutter….

we'd like a little land for an orchard and a garden and for a place to park at least two airstreams…..

Anacortes a wonderful place in the summer

Interesting read. We just bought a small summer place in Anacortes with room to park our Bambi (2006, 19') in back. We lived in Anacortes previously (2001 through 2005) and really liked the community expect for the rain and clouds 9 months of the year. But last summer was just great. The ferry to the San Juan Islands (there are many...San Juan, Orcas, Shaw, Lopez, Guames, etc) leaves from Anacortes. We spend winters in Tucson.

Prior to the Bambi we had a motorhome for 5 years and visited Anacortes frequently during the summer. The place to stay is Pioneer Trails which is perhaps a mile further out. Nice place, but heavily treed... only a few spaces get satellite reception (see pic).

We too spent some time in Sequim over on the Olympic Peninsula. Nice little town with at least a couple excellent restaurants. And I do mean excellent....some of the best meals we have had anywhere.

You guys need to tone this down, our secret is secret is going to get out and there will be a flood of people invading our little paradise.

Actually the thing that got me was the first time I went to the DMV. There was 2 of us in line and a guy came in and left mumbling under his breath that he would come back when it wasn't so busy. I like it here.
