If you have time for a detour, you should visit the Great Sand Dunes, if you've never been there before. The Pinyon Flats campground is one of the nicest national park campgrounds I have stayed in. Only water hookups, no electric or sewer.

Watching the sun set over the dunes with a campfire going is an experience I hope to repeat some day.

Today we made a really big circle

Left mesa verde at 830 local and headed west on 160 headed for cortez and hooked a right on colorado 145,,,headed for telluride

…such beauty is hard to comprehend and even harder to catch as in a photograph…the beauty and colors are so awesome and deep…the delores river running by the side of the highway….aspen leaves beginning to turn…a beautiful golden hue and begin to fall as the weather cools.

then the village of telluride…quaint and very dog friendly…

then to colorado 62 to loop over to the "million Dollar highway"…and ridgeway colorado….. and then the sunday afternoon parade began……every one in colorado and all visitors and every semi hauler and motorcycle and bicycle began the trek south on this very windy mountainous road,,…some 80 miles of pure 15mph…no slow traffic using the pullouts…..

finally after about 35 miles of torture…it began to clear out…a 250 circle of some of the most spectacular scenery on earth…glad i did it…..WOULD NOT PULL A TRAILER UP OR DOWN IT mainly because of the traffic...

thoughts on Mesa Verde National Park

for starters it is incredibly beautiful…an 8000 ft or so Mesa so beautifully green and immense in its area. for us it was just another national park on the list and a worthwhile 2 day stay.

for most folks the reason to come here is the cliff dwellings and ruins on an ancient indian civilization that lived and farmed on top of the mesa…

and bus loads of them come to climb and seek ancients peoples trying to make some connection to the madness of our times.

the campground itself is old like most national parks….some sites adequate, some barely…

i got lucky and got one actually long enough wide enough and shaded…plus water ..elec and sewer

so that is it for beautiful southwest colorado for now…..maybe a return trip to gather with the 4CU at or around the international rally next july

another day up the road

at mesa verde were parked by a 25fb from louisiana; on the road to green river today we passed three airstreams; as we pull into green river state park there are three other airstreams, a brand new 23ft, and two vintage units from colorado and just now a newish 30ft classic circled looking for a spot….It is monday , the middle of october and this little park in the middle of nowhere is full and folks circling

the green river flows just thru the park…but it is not green:

weather has been great so far and looks very nice…until we get to olympia….then the dreded RAIN RAIN RAIN…begins:

never rains in texas………..

Escape from Salt Lake City

last night was a stay at utah lake state park….in provo utah, or on the outskirts……a very large fresh water lake……

really disappointed…for the park was not well kept and had several questionable residents who would look more at home in McAllen, Texas…
camp host was a joke and the spot i had reserved was taken and not vacated by one of the transientsbut we found another spot and went on.

I feared salt lake city traffic…so we hit the 15 at 6am local…the park is about 60 miles from downtown SLC and even at this early hour the traffic was heavy but moving fast…later in the morning would almost have to crawl through there…anyway six hours later we have arrived in caldwell idaho at the ambassador RV resort…pretty nice.

Oregon tomorrow

and so today

was a 400 mile 6 hour journey through the heart of salt lake city on IH 15…and up to the split where we took IH 84 west…so the entire trip was interstate highway and a speed limit of 80mph….

and now 2000 miles into this trip i am amazed at the performance difference in my rig with the addition of the new michelin LTX MS2 tires…there is twice as much rubber on these than on the original equipment maypops…….

and i had an 18 year old hensley that i replaced before this trip with a "new "reconditioned hensley…and it is an amazing difference……

so i find my self flying low on these 80mph interstates…..that or get runded over:tomorrow a journey across central oregon on US 26 headed for cove palisades state park at terrebonne oregon…….

geronimo….

I was wondering if you were taking i-84 on in to Oregon or a different route. That 6% grade descent into Pendleton with all the hairpins is, um, interesting.

I-84 West into Pendleton isn't so bad......just don't ride the brake and stay at 50 or below and you'll do fine.

Never done it with a trailer. But my first time down it, it was windy and fairly heavy with truck traffic. I was driving a VW Eurovan Weekender, which has the aerodynamics of a cinder block. It was also my first cross-country trip. No smart phones or easy Internet access back then. I had an infant, a two year old, and a three year old in the back. No stress at all.

Now I dread driving up it more than down it. Can almost see the gas gauge moving.

Now if you want a truly bizarre entrance to Oregon, 95 north from Winnemucca, NV. The southwestern corner of Oregon is bizarre. :-)

"had several questionable residents who would look more at home in McAllen, Texas… "

Wow, must be you had a bad encounter with a Winter Texan from Moosejaw somewhere along the way.

We did the cabbage yesterday and are in the Wildhorse casino campground, leaving this morning. Gas mileage improved coming down the hill.
