pondering homelessness
again. tonight is the last night to sleep in a bed in a house in texas…..forever
tomorrow all HER stuff, i have none that is not in the trailer or truck, will be put in a PODS storage unit , hauled away to await its final destination.
the remainder of the furniture will stay with the house as buyer wanted it and well…..C'est la vie
the first time we did this…sold house and hit the road…in search of …
Over the Mountains
Of the Moon,
Down the Valley of the Shadow,
Ride, boldly ride,"
The shade replied-
"If you seek for Eldorado!"
and each and every place we traveled was paradise and where we wanted to
be….until the next one arrived…
and during this time we realized….hey we can't be everywhere…struck by the obvious we punted….but had circled washington enough to know that somewhere there was where we wanted to be….and then the Islands came into our view…..
so now homeless again….in search for eldorado…in the straits of juan de fuca….
October 1st a trip from elgin, texas to abilene state park…..then the next day, like an aviator i will break the surly bonds of the great state of tejas with the intent of never returning…..
a texas longhorn in the rear view mirror…vaya con dios

LOL - just came upon this thread and I had to laugh, cause I am pushing the hubby to move me back to Texas. I have lived here 12 years now and every September - June I whine about the cold and damp and dark ...well, from October to May it's more dark than light! Safe travels and welcome...but consider investing in a SAD light for the depression that sets in after a while. Oh, and make sure you always have a sweater and a jacket with a hood, cause it rarely gets warm around here (and I don't consider anything below 85 degrees to be warm ;-)). Change is always good, so enjoy your damp adventure here is the beautiful PNW!

Lori, I've had the same thoughts. Visit the PNW July-Sept. and you think, my gosh why would anyone want to live elsewhere. After a few winters or commutes through the Seattle-Bellevue megalopolis or setting up your life around a ferry schedule and it can wear pretty thin. I have a picture of the family during one 4th of July picnic as we sit around a table along Chuckanut Drive.....in our parkas, freezing our hindquarters off. But it all has its charms and the scenery and ocean/evergreen smell is absolutely intoxicating. Can't wait to get back there with our Airstream, should arrive July 5th and will be properly vacated mid-Sept.

Well, it is an Adventure
Weather (not whether!) and When to Visit The San Juan Islands get less rainfall than Seattle due to their location in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains to the southwest. Summertime high temperatures are around 70 ° while average winter lows are in the high 30s. Snow is infrequent. As true anywhere in the Pacific NW, bring layered clothing even in the summer as it can be chilly at night or if you go out on a boat (the average ocean water temperature is about 45 degrees). The spring and especially summer and early fall months are the best seasons to visit the islands; the weather is better, the days are much longer (this is a very high latitude), with plenty of daylight hours to explore.
so there are some differences in climate of the islands vs lower in the sound…rainfall is about half of that that seattle gets….the darkness and daylight length is just what it is….
and so we have been studying and trying to prepare for the changes in climate, extreme from texas…..and while true being there in the summer months makes one believe that paradise awaits…but, i think we are being realistic and going to rent a place for the winter and see how the living is…..if not I GOT WHEELS
BUT 68 YEARS OF TEXAS is enough for several lifetimes…and somewhere else is in the plan…..

I enjoy all the naysayers complaining about the Seattle weather. The rain shadow around the Sequim area of the North Olympic Peninsula is so different it's hard for people to comprehend. We have been here for 15 years and have never regretted it. If I get cold I put a sweater or jacket on. If I get hot I can only take so much off and beyond that I suffer. As to the darkness I find it very easy to keep my mind and hands occupied enough to not notice.
The only thing I would be concerned about your plan would be living on an island. That would be a bit restrictive for my taste. We pay a price for living in a rural community for shopping and medical and those things associated with city life. To me that cost goes up even more on the San Juan Islands. Only you can decide if you can live with that.
Have a safe trip and if you would like to come by and chat about aluminum and rivets give me a yell.

We have just the opposite here in Florida. People come visit in Nov - Feb, and think, "Man! This weather is AWESOME!!!" Then they move here, and March through October hits, with August being slightly warmer than the biblical lake of fire...
But, being from Texas, you know what I mean, only you're a bit drier than we are.
Enjoy your move. I have a very good friend from Florida that lives in Seattle, and he loves it! It's all in your head!
