That looks nice and was built with the NW in mind. Too many houses here where I live were built Scandinavian-style with high angled roofs (for snow we don't get) and don't have large covered outdoor living spaces, which is essential for extending the outdoor season. The more porch the better.

A heavy downpour is no reason to not fire up the BBQ.

it is curious

the house was designed as an "Adirondack" style house due to the fact the owner was from that region of upstate NY and wanted that style on orcas…i'm certainly no architectural devotee…..but it seems to blend with its place on the island.

the oil furnace is noisy and a new electric will be much more efficient.

it has a generator…in case of the certain, from time to time, island power outage….as we are only connected to the mainland by a gigantic extension cord..that has been broken by a ships anchor dragging it

Do like me. When the power goes out go live in the camper.

My husband keeps moss at bay with a sprayer full of water and Tide. It works. I like the moss but then again I leave it to him to worry about the roof. I like to think about other things (like camping).

That house is real homey and has a real PacNW look to it. Those your trees too?

well i guess

i'll just rent the trees…the property is in a "protected preserve" with a forrest management plan, fire suppression procedures…
so the trees, the forrest…..the property adjoins the Mt Pickett preserve which, i'm told, has one of the largest old growth un logged , pristine forrest in the PNW…

On Orcas, nature rules and man just smiles

with every day that passes on this island, for me is becoming another day…

that i don't ever want to leave……..

so onward thru the fog…….

i believe the furry freak brothers coined that phrase…..

The designer of that house completely knows the NW. The transition from inside to outside should be gradual. I want to see the glory of the NW whether I'm eating, cooking, or simply lounging.

The NW is one of the most magical places left on the planet.

Spectacularly beautiful!

Imagine.....getting up to that every morning, sipping your coffee or tea and looking out those windows.

Lucky you.

one word of caution for you. the salt air will not be kind to your AS. pay more attention than usual to the outer skin as pitting will happen before your very eyes.

we looked at a used AS that had been a 'retreat' on San Juan and it was trashed on the exterior. we have the same issues here in Sequim with the salt air pitting the exterior hardware at our home.

glad to hear about your home generator. this fall/winter we have had hurricane flags flying on the strait twice now. and of course you are right in line for the Frazier air and subsequent strait effect snow, interesting.

your new home looks spectacular, enjoy your time on the island.

buying real estate

is almost if not more stressful than selling….

so we have to do the needed due diligence…gather up the costs of needed repairs or upgrades and how much of that cost can get shifted to the seller….

that is the dance we do now for the next two weeks…if all of this falls into place to the monetary satisfaction of both parties…

then we get to sweat out the bank's appraisal……

all this with this horribleisland weather….cold…wet…sunny…partially dry…

funny thing is …sister-in-law from austin texas was complaining about the rain in texas……go figure…but they do get more rain there than olga, wa does…32 inches versus 29 inches in olga….

and so the new year goes

just me and my shadow…..

whether or not….

but weather….

so they say 2014 was a record warm year for western washington…..

drier than normal …so they say….

the local electric power company is going to have to raise rates because it was so warm and electrical usage declined,,,therein…a budget shortfall

but electricity per kWh is much cheaper than in …say texas….

the weather here so far for us…newbies to this damp…dark….pnw weather…well we take to it like ducks to water….

one dream home down…..

looking for the next one….

well the eagle lake property…was a dream house in a dream area….but….it was a beautiful house…twenty years old….original owner, a woman…died 10 years ago…house in trust for ten years after death.

10 kids, including the da for san juan county washington….defered all the maintenance for the past 10 years …only using as a joy pad for uncaring relatives….

so we found 170K worth of repairs…most notably the decks that were some rotten…to the tune of 100k…just to replace/repair decks….

and the concrete tile roof….was really suspect…due to lack of maintenance….

so they let a beautiful house sit and rot thru gross neglect…..

and we bailed out…..geronimo

go figure…..

the island is like that though….nature is aggressive…..man is the intruder

Bummer, but good that you had it all checked out instead of being had for a sucker.

There'll be another.

Metal roof is the way to go in those islands. Stuff doesn't stick to it nearly as much as with other roofing.

it had concrete tile

flat…concrete squares on the roof……only flaw is that it relies on the underlayment….no way to tell with roof….touted as at least a 50 year product…..but….get otta here…..

if , forbid, anything had to be done to re roof that devil…it would cost 20K,,,,

just to truck the stuff off the island……

good product ,,IF IT WAS MAINTAINED……funny how people will just let a 800K asset…just rot to the ground…..

beautiful house…dream location……stupid people
