The Nugget's Great American Tour Plan

We are putting together all the pieces of our February 2015 adventure launch. Here's the itinerary for our general destinations; we expect there to be lot's of fill-in spots along they way. Any recommendations from you Obi One Canobie Airstreamers out there?

We wish to start in Florida Around Feb 5th in Cedar Key then on to Destin and eventually, off to New Orleans. Then up to Memphis and over to Nashville.

From there it's on to St. Loius and a few surrounding cities to visit family. Then we'll hit St. Cloud then South Dakota. Next up, Yellowstone, then the Tetons. Then, Boise for a bit and then back through Salt Lake City to Arches National Park and then Gunnison, Co and surrounding areas. Then we'll head down to Albuquerque for the Baloon Fiesta in October. After that we'll bounce around New Mexico and Arizona before heading back to the Florida panhandle for Thanksgiving.

Those are the headline cities...looking forward to all of the in between too!

You'd better factor in winter weather to your plan.

Yes, we actually want to kick around Florida until the middle or end of March and then head to New Orleans.

We thought the same thing this year.... saw snow, lots of snow, and near zero temps in the Midwest mid March. Rule one is to always expect the unexpected.... And have flotsa lpg onboard!

Best of luck!

New Orleans to Nashville, if ya' wanna skip Memphis, wander up to Natchez via the 2 lane roads. Check out the old home tours (we like Longwood). Then cruise to Nashville on the Natchez Trace. There are a couple of free no-hookup campgrounds on the trace if you are into that stuff.

Oh, Post LOTS of photos!

Thank you! Just did a little research on this, and the Nachez Trace looks like a great way to go! What a nice scenic drive. All three of the parks that offer free camping look like great options too...and the price is right.

I think we could go from New Orleans to Natchitoches (where my husband went to college) and then over to Nachez to follow the parkway. We won't be in a rush to get to the north just yet, unless it happens to be a warm winter...unlike this year. We'll have an outline like this in pace and then figure it out as we go. Perfect! Thanks again!

Spring on the Trace

...can be spectacular; we have biked parts of it nearly every year. Best time is before the first mowing because the wildflowers are great. BUT WATCH THE WEATHER. TAKE EVERY STORM SYSTEM SERIOUSLY. We have had thundersnow in April. (Really that's just fun and a great story.) Not so great was the prelude to the big tornado outbreak that leveled Tuscaloosa Alabama and cut a swath across the whole country. We were in Jeff Busby Campground when a couple of huge ones went by. Sadly, one of the first fatalities of that outbreak was in the campground.

When those weather patterns set up, they seem to follow one another for weeks and then comes the flooding around Memphis. With this changeable weather, next year may be great. If it looks scary to be in the trees in a tin can, you might do what we do -- head back to the coast. It's not Hurricane season ...

Have a great time planning and leave some breadcrumbs. we all might want to follow.

Al
