The North Cascade Highway

I just had to share this, even though I am not an Airstreamer yet. My wife and I decided to take a short two day vacation and do what is known as the Cascade Loop.

We left Seattle and traveled SR 2, across Steven's Pass into Leavenworth, WA, a Bavarian-styled town east of the Cascades. From there we took 97 north, following the Columbia river in a strange canyon of desert shrub and apple farms. We ended up in Winthrop, WA, which is this cool little cowboy town. We stayed the night at River's Edge Resort. Winthrop is worth a visit. We're already planning a return.

But then the magnum opus. We took SR 20 west across the northern Cascades, aka The North Cascade Highway. A well traveled friend told us he thinks this is the most scenic drive in the lower 48, and after doing it I have to agree.

My pictures cannot in any way come close to the actual experience of being in this place. My wife and I were teary eyed. This is just one spot along the way.

If you like going to places where you are humbled by nature, and this is what I live for, this is the ultimate drive.

I have more photos if anyone is interested.

The first time I drove the North Cascade highway (Rt 20) I was with a friend and we stopped at a pull out. The air was incredibly clean with no haze, nothing in it at all. He said that he didn't trust anything he could not see, this could not be air. That was 30 years ago, and yes, it is a beautiful highway.

I know what you mean about doing more it than once. I can't wait until I get to do it again. I also want to stay at the Ross Lake Resort on those floating cabins.

I almost thought about dropping in on you when we passed Rockport, but we had to get back to Seattle Saturday before six.

This might happen sooner than later. I recently traded in my aging 98 Ford Expedition on a 2007 Volvo XC90 V8. This was mostly because I have kids learning to drive, and it's even hard for me to park the Expedition. Plus I wanted the safety of the Volvo.

I was pleasantly surprised to see a max towing capacity of 5k. Mine is not equipped with the factory hitch, which is probably a good thing, it only supported a tongue weight of 200 lbs. I've found an after market hitch that supports 500 lbs/5000 lbs.

That would get me in a 16 Sport. I really wanted a double axle, and am particularly found of the 27FB. But perhaps I can work my way up.

My wife doesn't drive, so we've always been a one car family. With a 15, 17, and 18 year old, I suppose it is time to consider having two cars. Maybe the second will be a more capable towing vehicle.

Of course my upcoming insurance bill might keep me out of an AS for a while.

Tomy, You'd not have enjoyed Winthrop this past summer because of terrible fires in the area. My sister/bro-in-law were actually evacuated when fire jumped the river across from them (their house survived). Sister says deer displaced by the fires are grouped in every available pasture, but browse is getting scarce. How will they survive? Nonna.PapaVino

That's pretty scary. We saw a lot of the devastation. Looks like it wiped out a lot apple orchards east of Winthrop. All the deer crossing signs surprised me. I've just always pictured deer living in forests.

Thanks for sharing, we haven't been up that way in about 7 or 8 years. Need to do it again before they close the road. We just drove up Hwy 75 from, Ketchum ID to Missoula, a beautiful drive through the Sawtooth Mountains. Then I-90 to Spokane another beautiful road this time of year.
