And even more of them down the road. There were lots of signs warning of buffalo on the highway.

We went by Mucho Lake. It gets it's jade green color from fine rock ground by glacier action into a flour like dust that remains suspended in the water and reflects light.

The road is winding and goes up and down some pretty good grades. The highest pass on the Alaska Highway is here, Summit Pass at 4250 ft.

It was way too hot in Ft. Nelson and the RV park was terrible so we didn't spend much time there. As we left town Irene thought she saw a forest fire. Turned out it was a burn off stack from one of the many natural gas plants in the area. If you enlarge the picture you can see flames at the tree tops just left of the center of the picture.

There is a lot of energy production in the area and these worker housing facilities were everywhere. There was truck after truck carrying refinery equipment. Many signs of a booming economy here.

This is the monument to the 12 soldiers that drowned in Charlie Lake during the construction of the Alaska Highway.
We stayed at the Rotary Park next to the lake. It is run by the Rotary Club and all profits go to charity.

The next morning we headed out and crossed the Peace River Bridge. It is the longest span over water on the Alaska Highway.

A few miles past the Peace River we turned off on a short section of the old highway. There is a curved wood bridge that crosses the Kiskatinan River.

This is Mile 0, the beginning of the Alaska Highway. You can see the Hagarstream carries the evidence of having been on the "Highway" mud up to the windows.

We found a truck wash to clean off the Alaska Highway mud. It was a large metal warehouse type building. You tell them you want wash and they open a door. When you drive in the timer starts. There was two pressure wands and two brushes with soap so we both went to work. When finished you open the other door and when you drive out the timer stops. Stop at the office and pay for your time. It worked well, the Hagarstream looked much better and it cost $10.25. A real bargain and much better than putting a handful of quarters in a slot.
We found another Rotary park in Grande Prairie. The entrance was through the parking lot of the college.

Grande Prairie is a good sized town with shopping mall, Costco, Walmart and many of the big name stores. How many industrial supplies do you see that have several oil pump jacks on display?

There is big oil money and stuff is priced to match. We stopped to pick up some beer and a 6-pack of Bud was $13.00. We didn't buy much. Here is a true Walmart camper.

We turned right on the Yellowhead Highway toward Jasper. As you enter the Jasper National Park you stop at the pay booth. It costs just under $20.00 a day to be in the park. We bought 3 days. All the campsites were full so we were told we could stay at the overflow lot just north of the town of Jasper. It was raining pretty good by now and within 5 minutes of entering the park we are doing about 55 mph when a deer on it's side goes flying by me on the left. At the same time a BMW spinning out of control passes me on the shoulder on the right. It certainly added a bit of excitement to entering the park. We did continue into town and found the visitor center.

We continued south and stopped at Sunwapta Falls. As we pulled into the parking lot we saw Steve and Linda just getting out of their Airstream. We chatted for a few minutes until a space opened and we parked and visited for quite a while. The were from Florida and were traveling for 6 months. They were traveling northwest heading toward Seattle to visit family. The falls were beautiful.

One of the tours you can take is on these special buses that have 6' high balloon tires so they can drive on the glacier. They take you quite away up on the glacier and then you can get out and walk around on the ice for awhile. There are little mini streamlets of ice melt so you can drink some glacier melt.

Rascal found a large group of fans here. The place was packed and many wanted to pet and take his picture. One guy came up to Irene and said in a couple of days your dog's picture will be posted around the world. People from Asia, Europe, Australia and the Middle East were taking pictures. Here Rascal challenged a mountain goat to the top of the rock.
