We drove to the top of the Midnight Dome. I never saw an actual description but it seemed like about 8 miles of 10% + grade to reach the top, mostly in 1st gear. It seems about 150 people climbed to the top on June 21, 1899 to see the midnight sun. After speeches and celebration the sun set at 11:30 and rose about 2 hours later. The solstice was never celebrated there again but it remained a popular spot.
This is looking South.

Next we followed Bonanza Creek about 14 miles of dirt road to dredge #4. This was the largest dredge of this type ever built.

Dredge #4 was 8 stories tall, 140 feet long and displaced 3000 tons. It actually sank on this spot. After many years it was taken over by Parks Canada and refloated. They cleaned it up and started offering tours. Much of it was vandalized but it is still pretty impressive.

The dredge was powered by electricity generated at a plant that was 60 KM away. It only required 4 men to operate the dredge and it operated for 46 years.

Nice pics and commentary, you two. Sorry we missed them on the big screen. Still having compressor and air bag problems, will not inflate and the compressor runs all the time.
Got crunched on I-84, insurance company will be happy since they think it was my fault.
All the best, give Rascal a pet for us. M & J

Mike I don't quite know how you did that but all I can say is you got to take better care of Old Bess.

Check to see if your compressor is actually pumping. It may have a bad valve or something, motor running but not actually pumping air. If you can find compressed air at a fuel stop, pump up the tank. If it airs up the bags think about a new compressor.

Back on the Bonanza Creek we came to Claim 33. Again you can pan gold for X dollars for so many hours. It was neat spot with several old buildings and lots of rusty mining equipment scattered around.

There is a thing here called the Tintina Trench. It is something about plates stacking on top of each other millions of years ago. It stirred up rock and gravel and brought up the gold that put the Klondike on the map. The whole thing is much more complicated and way beyond what my feeble mind can handle so if you want to know more you will have to Google it.

We actually saw two porcupines but we were unable to get a picture of the first one. This guy was wandering across the roadway. I guess there are a lot of these guys around but I can't say I expected to see one strolling down the road.

This is the Five finger Rapids. Back in the days of the Klondike Gold Rush the paddle wheelers going to Whitehorse had to winch themselves across a 1 to 2 foot drop in the water level. At some point they cleared out the obstruction so the boats could float through here.

Leaving Whitehorse we headed to Johnson's Crossing. The park was closed on the way up but new owners had purchased it and expected to open in a few weeks. It is on the Teslin River right next to this bridge.

It is a very nice area miles from anywhere. There is a small restaurant at the park where we ate dinner. We wanted take out so we could eat in the coach and not worry about Rascal. Unfortunately they were out of take out plates so they prepared our meal on the regular dinner plates covered with aluminum foil. We returned the plates after dinner.

Continuing south past Watson Lake you cross into British Columbia and back into Yukon and back to British Columbia several times. Before long we came across a bear on the side of the road.

We spent the night at the provincial park at Laird Hot Springs. It was a nice park with a raised wood boardwalk that crossed a marsh to get to the hot springs.
