From Delta Junction we headed to Tok for the evening. We had a great diner at Fast Eddies and camped in their lot for the night How's this for being under the rainbow.

After dinner I had to replace the key cylinder in the door latch. The little pin on the end of the cylinder broke off. Fortunately I had a spare. Rascal was keeping an eye on things.

That is a 104 mile drive and about 2/3's of it is dirt. There were about 35 Airstreams with one Squarestream motorhome.

Both of the places have raised stands with water and some river bed that you can pan for gold. It's $10 for one pan for four hours. They both have RV Parks with hook-ups. The Gold Camp has an interesting bandstand.

There is no power in Chicken, only diesel generators or solar. Chicken Creek has free dry camping. Here we are at sunset.

So Dan, when you are on the road up in that area, where do you buy provisions and fuel and supplies? It all looks so rural. It looks incredible from your pictures and descriptions.

It is an incredible place, the pictures here are such a small sample. Irene took nearly 7000 pictures on the trip. The hardest thing is to pick a few to post that will give an idea of what we saw.

Now that you ask we did buy fuel in Chicken. Two of the places had pumps and it was $4.80 a gallon which is still about $1.50 a gallon less than in Canada. Chicken is about 40 miles from the border and the last chance to buy fuel.

This road is very desolate but most of the small towns do have some kind of grocery store. Most don't have a big selection but they have the staples. Probably the hardest thing to find was a decent steak at a reasonable price. We did have lots of halibut in the freezer and we stocked up as much as we could in the bigger towns. We did have some unknown brands of ice cream and we kept a couple on cans of Pillsbury Poppin Fresh cinnamon rolls for when we couldn't find a bakery.

We were fortunate that we saw several graders working on the road so parts of it were in great shape.

Ahhh... brings back memories of home! I think I told you I lived in Eagle for almost 5 years - only saw this junction 4 or 5 times though. Much easier to fly over all this!

The gal tending bar at Chicken Creek lived in Eagle her entire life but only went home once every 3 or 4 weeks because she was scared to drive the road up to Eagle. I think many people agree with you, there are small airplanes everywhere you go in Alaska.

Getting back to Dawson City this is the paddle wheeler Keno which used to run up and down the Yukon River.

Dawson City is an interesting town in that with the exception of the highway that runs through town, all the roads are dirt with wood boardwalks.
