The Coast of Maine

Considering a trip up there this summer because we've never been there. Interested in scenery, good food, bike riding, and kayaking.

Please comment on your thoughts.

How are the mosquitoes and black flies?

Good food, just drive Highway 1 and stop at every Lobster shack you see. Also, someplace near Kennebunk is the Maine Dinner, we love the soup and just about everything else. Also, way up is Cobbs Cook State Park, no hook ups, but great views and great Kayaking.

Enjoy

You will love bike riding the carriage roads in Acadia national Park. Our trips have always been late August early September -- no bug issues at all. Crowds are pretty light from late August on as kids getting ready to go back to school.

What paiceman said.

Go, and eat lobster every chance you get.

Camden Hills State Park. Nice place, nice area and the lobsters are pretty good too. Camden is a beautiful area along the coast.

Ditto what everyone else said. If you go in late August- early September the wild blueberries will be out. We made so many cobblers when we were up there last year and I brought back a bunch for muffins throughout the year.

A tip from an old Yankee who has been driving the roads of Texas for the last 43 years..... if you drive Highway 1, remember that roads in New England are not as the crow flies, more as the cow wanders..... so give yourself plenty of time if you are driving up the coast of Maine, it will always take you 2-3 hours longer than you expect it to, but enjoy the scenery along the way. If you get to Camden, they have Shakespeare in the park at a beautiful stone amphitheater overlooking the harbor.

The black flies are wicked in May, June, and sometimes into mid-July. Mosquitoes can get bad, especially at dusk, but the smoke of a campfire can discourage them.

But there's no such thing as a free lunch, and the bugs are just the "price of admission" for all the great lobster. ;-)

Thanks for everyone's input. Appreciate it. Is there an effective repellant for black flies?

I use Deep Woods Off. Not perfect, but better than nothing.

I loved that stuff as a kid . . . Made me smell like an old hermit woodsman from Black North . . . A place that really exists outside of Acworth NH
