I have worked and paid taxes all of my life. The Senior Park Pass is the only kind of free thing that I have ever gotten from the Federal Government. I intend to keep it and use it often.

I suppose that the young lady who wrote that article is also appalled that I would get senior price coffee at McDonald's.

Well, she can just pass her opinions around all of the Millennials who still live with and sponge off their parents.

It's the other way around. Reserve America is paid to operate the website by each agency whose parks appear there, as I recently learned when some Alabama State Parks started using Reserve America instead of their previous policy of taking all reservations by phone. The agency cost to fund the RA website is less than the personnel cost of staffing the phone lines, and there are fewer mistakes (lost reservations, double bookings, etc.) using RA compared to reservations by phone only.

On the other side just last week our president opened the national parks for free for a year to any family having a child going into the 3rd. grade.

I think that is an idea that should be expanded to open the National parks for free to everyone regardless of age. As long as we can give untold billions to any country that asks for it we should be able to afford our parks. All we have to figure out is the kickback ration the those countries give our politicians.

The first hint at his limited expanse of educations is his statement: "Bryce Canyon is the single most impressive thing I have ever seen in a national park."

Canadians used to park for free all winter st the Florida Greenway. We used to have trouble finding a parking place for our horse trailer. At least a
minimum fee is due now
I hear the Water management camping is free.

As an 80% disabled vet I don't mind using my Access Pass. Knocks the site cost by 50%. Took me 10 minutes to get it when we were at the Grand Canyon at no cost. Just showed my VA card that shows I am service connected disabled.

Access Pass
  • Free
  • For U.S. citizens or permanent residents with permanent disabilities.
  • May be obtained in person at a federal recreation site or through the mail using this application form. The cost of obtaining an Access Pass through the mail is ten dollars ($10) for processing the application (the Pass is free). Applicants must provide documentation of permanent disability and residency or citizenship.
  • May provide a 50 percent discount on some amenity fees charged for facilities and services such as camping, swimming, boat launching, and specialized interpretive services.
  • Generally does NOT cover or reduce special recreation permit fees or fees charged by concessioners.

Income equality or inequality have nothing to do with it. I was unaware that the NPS turns a profit, good for them! Other governmental agencies need to read their playbook. In the mean time, we all can find singular benefits that some have, and some don't, and grouse about whether it is "fair " or not. I'm not into fairness, but rather you get what you work for. I have my pass, and frankly don't use it enough. Maybe I'll be in line in front of the author the next time I visit Bryce and I can wave at him. I guess there's SOMETHING about Airstreams amongst all this chatter!
