We had travelled close to 20,000 miles in 2007 with out a serious problem. Yesterday, we were 90 miles from home when the power to our wheels quit. We have OnStar, mainly because of health and age reasons, and yesterday it all paid off!
We were able to get well off of I-75 on the edge, thought a minute, then called OnStar. Less than one hour later we were being towed to a Chevy dealer.
The tow truck was enormus! When I went to climb in, I think my nose was level with the seat. He put a carrier under the front tires of our Avalanche, did some other things, and took off towing our Avalanche and Airstream. When we arrived at the Chevy dealer's lot, the tow truck BACKED the Airstream into a parking space. I had no idea that you could back a double tow. I know that I can't even back a single tow.
My husband rented a car and continued on to Jacksonville while I rented another car and returned home with our two Yorkies. The Av and AS are in Sarasota for now.
I know that we could have made the same arrangements without OnStar, but it was certainly worth it to us to have OnStar take care of it. We would have had to find a towing service and a place to take the Av and AS. The towing service was going to come back with a different tow truck if we weren't able to leave the AS at the Chevy place. We have a Hensley hitch so that could have been a problem but was not to the towing company.
We feel very lucky to have travelled so many miles this year trouble free.
