plastic wheel wells

shudder to think of the resulting damage, seems strange the AS builds a trailer of primarily aluminum but used plastic for the wheel wells ? mine is 1972, maybe newer ones have metal ? probably cheaper to buy a tire monitor system than replace the old plastic .. & safer of course !

Um, plastic is better, IMO. My old SOB had metal (galvanized) wheel wells and they rusted out and leaked on the corners after only 2 years! Ordered the "revised" wheel wells from the mfr. and they were plastic. Lasted another 15 years, until I sold it.

It should be understood a TPMS may or may not protect your Airstream from tire failure (blowout) damage. A sudden tire failure may occur without any prior symptoms, in which case the TPMS advises you the tire has failed and damaged your Airstream.

TPMS is a sill a good idea, puts some odds in your favor. We've been considering it for five years now.

I often wondered though....if the TPMS indicates a blowout and I grabbed the manual apply lever and applied enough brake to lock the flat tire brake, while leaving the others not locked...could that minimize the rotational shredding that tears up the well and aluminum??? Hope I never have to try that theory, but it sure seems the damage I've seen in pics is the result of riding for awhile with the blown tire.
