Independence Pass east of Aspen, Colo., is another interesting one. It is now restricted to vehicles of no more than 35'. The west side has some very narrow parts, blind curves and low walls that will only slow your descent off the side slightly. A 35' vehicle would have a tough time, but I suppose it can be done. On the east side, no walls or guardrails.

Lukachukai Pass / Buffalo Pass

I'll throw in a couple of images from Lukachukai Pass (as it's called on some maps) or Buffalo Pass (as it's called on, e.g., Google Earth). The attachment is a slanting view from Google Earth; you can see Shiprock in the upper right corner. The other is a photo I took of Shiprock from the top of the pass.

When the kids were 11, 9 and 1, we left the pop up at the KOA at Buena Vista and drove over Independence to visit Aspen... we were in Jeep Cherokee... would have not wanted to have been driving anything bigger down the west side..... those low walls seemed more like a very low curb...

and there were bicycle riders coming back down from the top of the pass on their road cycles back to Aspen...

talk about white knuckles

eubank - Gorgeous picture of Shiprock! I need to get out in that area - I have relatives who ran the Trading Post at Ft. Wingate near Ramah. I was real little when I was last there, ie over 60 years ago. Winetripper
